Wyc Grousbeck for the record: ‘Doc Rivers left us, period’

sunday, July 7, 2013

Steve Bulpett

Wyc Grousbeck took a slight but interesting detour when a discussion with the Herald turned to the Celtics’ roster upheaval.

Asked about the major player changes, the co-owner let it be known he couldn’t speak about the trade with the Brooklyn Nets that has been widely confirmed but is not yet official. Grousbeck then turned to the key move that has been completed — getting a 2015 first-round draft pick from the Clippers for releasing Doc Rivers from his contract.

And while he expressed nothing but appreciation for the job Rivers did with the Celtics, Grousbeck was rather pointed about the process.

.

“The moves are just rumored,” he said of the aforementioned trade. “I mean, Doc left us, period. Doc left us. No spin will take that away. It was his idea and he left, and we made the best of it.

“We think we’re even with Doc. We think the nine years were nine great years. We would have been happy to continue, but that was not to be. I’m really glad Doc spent nine years here.”

Asked if he was disappointed that there has been some very public debate about how the departure went down, Grousbeck said: “I don’t think anybody thinks there’s two sides to it. I think everybody realizes it’s hard to leave a place where you’ve been nine years, so efforts are made to talk about it different ways, and I don’t have a problem with any of it. I’ve moved on.

“I’ll welcome him back, and I hope we kick the Clippers’ butt. But he’s a champion as far as I’m concerned.”

Is funny to hear Wyc talk about loyalty after he traded Paul Pierce, captain of te team, who played 15 season with the same shirt. So I do not knwo how Wyc can ask about loyality from Doc???

He didn't talk about loyalty, he just said he left and it was his idea. Pretty straightforward.

There are salary rules regarding players, which makes trading an iconic player like Pierce sensible. There are no salary rules for coaches.  Also, coaches have decades of shelf life. Players' shelf life a players are finite. These two situations aren't truly comparable.

Doc didn't want to coach through a rebuild so he forced his way out of town.  He gets to coach a title contender, and the Cs ownership save around $2.5 million a year for the next three on their head coach, plus get a first round pick.

I see it as a win win situation.  Wyc is merely pointing out that Doc was the one who created this situation and forced his way out of town.

Pierce was traded in the last year of his max

Should ownership and GM consider coaches ideas for the team? So, if coach tells you not to rebuild, why ownership has to ignore coach plans for the team? Doc 2 years before signed for 5-year contract, still 3 more years after this season...So if coach has 3 more years contract, why the ownership is changing strategies without coach consent?

I'm getting sick and tired of this Doc debacle.  It's becoming a poor man's version of Ray to Miami.

He left us.  So did Ray.

End of story.

Doc was only a coach here.  He didn't have an official role in personnel.  The coach doesn't get to decide if the franchise needs to rebuild or not.  He's (extremely well) paid to coach the team the GM builds for him.  Doc signed his five year deal, I'm sure he knew that KG and Pierce were aging, and that Ray was in his last year and the team tried to offload him at least once before.  he also know that the team had an option on Pierce's last year of his deal.  So he must have known that a rebuild some time within the five years was a good possibility.

Doc could have asked for a shorter deal, or a mutual opt out, if he felt this way about coaching a rebuilding team.  I don't blame him or am upset with him for how he handled the situation, because it set up a win/win for both parties, but it is indisputable that Doc drove this wagon. He forced his way out of town.

Different than the Ray situation.  Doc didn't sign for half the  money, against the Cs biggest rival.  He also didn't do it in a way where his old team didn't get any compensation, like Ray did.  Allen could have gotten more money out of Miami and forced a S and T,  giving the Cs some value out of him, but wanted to weaken the Cs on his way out the door.

I was referencing the part of both situations where the fans endlessly complain about it.

Pierce was an icon in this team. Ready to retire as a Cs. Can not trade him. Can SAS trade Duncan or LAL Bryant? NO.

So, who decides for rebuilding than? If coach is only insignificant member of staff, why you need a coach, and a GM? Lets have GM who is gone coach the team. This your argument has no sense. Of course coach is the governor of the team, without consent the ownership cannot drive a sport team.
