How do they sign him?  Aren't they still well over the cap?

Bad signing. They need a skilled PF. Not a slow footed center.

Presumably the taxpayer mid-level.  It's late in free agency, and there isn't much money left except with crappy teams.

Yeah I figured Jordan Hill would be Gasol's primary backup.

Of course are there such PFs around? I've lost track of FA over the weekend.

Can't LA s&t Howard to Houston. Get back a Terrance Jones + another talent + a size able trade exception?

Sure they could, if Houston had any interest in S&Ting Howard.

Think they'd want a do-over on the rumored Griffin/Bledsoe sign and trade?

Some talk about Lamar Odom coming back to the Lakers. See if those old partnerships could reinvigorate his career. The wishful option.

I would take a chance on Ivan Johnson. Nice aggressive PF. Productive backup. Cheap contract probably available on the minimum - since that might be all LAL have to spend with those luxury tax concerns.

Jason Maxiell and Marreese Speights are two other alternatives.

Speights will probably cost too much but he could be a nice fit in LA playing off of Pau Gasol. Nice wide body at 6-10. Add some real size to their frontline alongside Pau Gasol.

Lesser option would be DeJuan Blair. Desperate for prove himself. Playing in the spot light in LA while receiving good minutes either as a starter or a bench player would give him good exposure. Let him prove himself.

I think those are the best options LA can get given their limited flexibility.

In garbage time this season, he actually looked very similar to the player he was when getting rotational minutes.  I think he is desperate to prove himself and could be a useful player on a solid team.

I'm really intrigued to see if they try to play Gasol at center in D'Antoni's offense.  I think there could be some success to be had there.  I wouldn't be surprised if Nash, Gasol, and some pieces could hold a .500 record down until Kobe comes back.

And I wouldn't be surprised if the team stays around .500 after Kobe comes back too.

I don't see the Lakers taking on any deal that isn't expiring.  They have only $9.7 million on the books next season (Nash), and if Kobe agrees to sign a cap friendly deal, could have room for two max FAs.

They should trade Nash to Toronto for expiring deals, either at the deadline or next summer,  and they will have all kinds of cap room to reload (assuming that superstars like LeBron, Melo, Wade and Bosh want to move).
