good article about olynyk's offensive skills. good draft by ainge for sure.

but not a word about olynyk's limitations on defense. i think olynyk needs to gain some muscle and lose maybe 10 pounds. if so and with training, it would increase his over all speed, movement, and jump. with a bit more athleticism olynyk might become at least an average defender.

i think he is 2-3 years away from really hitting his stride, both offensively and defensively.

right now, if stevens teams olynyk up with sully in the front court, teams with good front lines will punish them. defensively those two can not keep up with opposing teams.

For three or four trips down the court the C's were running their offense through Olynk and Fab posting down low and it was extremely effective.  Then a bad pass turnover and they never went back to it.

Olynk can pass, the high low was looking really good.

if he's the real deal as a shooter / scorer / passer, he might be able to do a lot for us right away. Long range sniping at 7 ft. Creative passing and scoring in the paint. Let's work on that Defense!

yeah that 3 point shooting for a 7 footer is uncommon as we know. If ee get a real center during the rebuild, he(olynyk) will create great spacing for a center to destroy guys down low and/or dribble driving by guards and others.

Olynyk looked fluid, smart and efficient on offense and lousy on defense. No different than college. My doubts of him stem from what will happen to him when he is playing against real NBA players and real NBA defenses.

fair enough however we had doubts about sully and it looks like he will be a double-double machine for us going forward. Olynyk COULD be as well. maybe more scoring than rebounding though.  Do you feel both could give us nice depth at the 4 spot?

Defensively, KO was very competitive.  Not too many NBA coaches are going to let the opposing big pound the ball on the floor 5-6 times and back down their center without some kind of defensive help, like Nicholson was doing today. 

I thought Olynyk had a decent base, moved his feet well, and tried to body the post player.  he was able to pick up one offensive foul when chest bumped.  I don't see why he can't be a decent post defender, despite the short arms.  he has a good frame, good footwork, and seems to be game for the physical play.  He's never going to be a KG type, but all he needs to be is acceptable on defense, with his size and offensive skills, to be a decent NBA player at least.

I'm wondering what he will do with real NBA teammates.  Nobody other than Olynk really looked like NBA players for the C's.  Abromaitis was horrible, couldn't get a rebound to save his life.  Melo was good for a short stretch but mostly plodding.  Pressey slowed things down and did OK but was a turnover machine early.  Nobody else shot particularly well.  Meanwhile Orlando was playing two of its regular bigs.

What the Celtics need to continue to do is build up talent and assets in the organization so that they are in position to make a move for quality players.  But most of all they need a Superstar to build around first.  Rondo, Sully, Green look like above average NBA players.  But they need a true superstar to contend for an NBA title.

The rest of the final four teams all had legitimate centers. Hibbert and Gasol are two of the best centers in the league right now (with Gasol arguably being THE best), and Splitter is no slouch either. Then you look at other playoff teams anchored by guys like Chandler and Noah...hell, even Milwaukee had a legitimate post presence in Sanders.

The thing to keep in mind is the Celtics right now don't have an offensive system or a defensive system.  Stevens probably has no idea how they're going to play because he just got here plus his roster is likely to change between now and training camp.

This is the equivalent of a scrimmage and its nice the Olynyk looked good offensively.  He better have because the level of competition here is nothing close to what he's going to see.

Its great that he played well but lets not put this guy on the all star team quite yet.  Defensively from what I can see both he and the Celtics are going to have a ton of problems this year with KG gone.
