I work in food service and I understand what this social experiment is trying to do. I'd a appreciate the persons who tried to help.
But with that, let me say something first.
First of all, if you work in a restaurant or a food place, it doesn't matter where it is, they should not be allowed inside to stay if they are filthy and dirty because it breaks the first unwritten rule of restaurants, do not bother people. Customers are bothered of the fact that there is a person full of dirt and germs and Lord knows what else staying in the same restaurant, eating the same food, putting the same utensils in their mouth, using the same bathroom as theirs. I'm sorry if that sounded mean but that's just the way it is. I saw it.
You can serve them food and anything they want but if they are reeking in filth and stench, we have to tell them to take it to go (in my place of work we insist on having them taking it out or we don't serve them). Heck, having them inside making them wait for their food is risky already. It maybe right or wrong but the fact is it sends a message to other customers that places ignore cleanliness of the place if we let somebody like that in, let alone stay. You gotta protect the place of business as well, it's not being degrading, but when a person is biohazard, to you, to your products and to other people, you have to do something. It a real bummer that they are down on luck, but they could still fix themselves, wear neat clothes, wash hands at public toilets. Trust me, most food service workers do not discriminate unless the situation is this. It's tough helping a customer, homeless or not when they are soiled in dirty.
Heck, I can tell from experience that even hardworking construction guys are getting the same treatment sometimes. When their clothes are full of paint and dirt and they come in to a food place full of that, trust me, no one wants to sit near them. It's really becomes a different situation if we are talking about dirt and filth.
I appreciate the folks who tried to help the homeless man, and in my experience, I cant blame the guys who wants him out of the place either. You want to eat at a place that you know is clean and I understand where they are coming from.
Now insulting them is a different story.
