Eh, there's a difference between talking informally about the job and actually wanting him for the Celtics coaching job.  It's not like he was Ainge's first option but declined the position or anything, lol.

He was a smart effort guy but a great player; no.  Makes every practice better but doesn't get in enough to effect games.

I really loved scal's contributions in '09. But the team sucked with him before the big three.

Scales was a smart player but he was way too limited physically to ever be called even an average player. His brain and effort allowed him to play with good players without screwing things up. I used to identify with him a great deal because I had no talent but had high effort and could read the court extremely well.
As far as him being a coach, a former player who didn't have great skills is always doubted by skilled players until he proves himself as a coach. Scales needs to be an assistant for a while and show he can coach both big and small men.

If I was a coach would love to have Scal running practices. He is a gym rat who loves the game and would be a good complement to the more cerebral and calm Stevens.

That said Scal knows the sport, he knows good basketball and good coaching when he sees it; but you also need leadership and organizational skills that he has never possessed.

Love to have him in the Gym.

Scal would be a great bench guy for Stevens.  Could help with the Rondo wrangling, if he's still here.  Already has a good relationship presumably with Bradley and Olynyk.  Danny would trust him and he could probably relate to Stevens while translating some things to the NBA for him.
