The Hawks should be trying to outbid teams for their RFA's or looking for S&T partners to continue to collect assets for the future. There isn't an elite level player on the market to make this team a contender (unless Bynum can make a full recovery (a signing the Hawks should thoroughly consider)).

Korver at $6M is a movable contract, but not valuable enough of an asset to justify the cap space.

These are the kind of deals tier 2 and 3 franchises make in the NBA. They settle on mediocre because it's all they have in the grand scheme of things. Look at the Bucks and the Mayo deal as another example.

Again, not a CBA expert so I'm having trouble grasping your proposition (sorry in advance!). As far as I know, trade exceptions simply allow teams to make unbalanced trades even though they're over the cap. How would that suddenly reduce payroll?

Unless you're meaning that collectively, since Hump & miscellaneous contracts would be worth more than Smith's annual, we'd save money that way. In that case, what's the point of the trade exception?

Humphries would work on a separate deal for Smith. Whatever players you send afterwards would be on a separate deal for no player at all, so hence the trade exception, which is can happen because Atlanta is under the cap and has no trade restrictions to receive players.

I agree... It takes a good, strong decision maker to change the culture. Miami was a tier 2 franchise until they didn't settle for mediocrity.

Although the CBA forces teams to have a certain amount of salary (making it tougher to save cap space), staying away from 3-4-5 year deals, for players the level of Korver, is an essential part to maintaining the cap space from year to year and capitalizing when it's time.

The Bucks are a prime example of a team that should just start over instead of trying to continuously salvage the mediocrity they're in.
