If I had to bet on which "franchise" player in the league right now has the lowest chance of ever winning a ring, I'd pick Dwight Howard. I think he brings negativity and selfishness wherever he goes.

I hope he doesn't sign with Houston, because I kind of like that franchise.
I'd go with Carmelo.

Of course end of the bench type titles can happen for anyone.

I also think he's going to Houston

He have to be smart choosing a team that can be a real contender. Houston are not a team that can win NBA title. He has more chances playing for Dallas

Are you serious.

I think he's going to stay with the Lakers. I don't think Houston with Dwight will have any better shot at a championship than the Lakers with Dwight.

So you honestly think that Houston with Dwight and the Lakers with Dwight are comparable teams?

Seriously?

Houston: arguably the best offensive team in the league, with a top 5 superstar-level player already in James Harden. Lots of cap space and roster flexibility. Respected coach. Dwight Howard will be an upgrade over Asik on both ends.

Lakers: an injured Kobe who will miss who knows how many games, and who knows how effective he will be when he comes back. Bad offense, bad defense. No players even close to the caliber of James Harden. No players besides Dwight that will even sniff an All-Star selection. No cap space or roster flexibility to put pieces around Dwight.

How on earth do the Lakers have just as good a shot as the Rockets?

This is a superstar driven league. The Rockets, if they get Dwight, will have two bona-fide superstars who each have a convincing argument for being the best all around players at their respective positions in the league today.

Not only that, but even without Dwight the Rockets were a devastatingly effective and efficient team.

I'm not saying the Rockets will become instant favorites, but they are in a much, much, much, much better situation than the Lakers FROM EVERY POSSIBLE PERSPECTIVE. Financial, management, coaching, roster, talent ...

  • We may as well put Tyrion in at center.
I think that the Rockets are in the lead with Golden State being a dark horse.

... who got bounced in the playoffs just like the Lakers.
Superstar driven league? Agreed. 100%. Kobe might be coming back from an injury, but he's still Kobe. One of the best players in the league.
So, yes, I'm completely serious that the Laker with Dwight have about as good a chance as Houston with Dwight.

I would be very VERY surprised if Dwight stays in LA.

LA has yet to make any roster moves or get rid of D'Antoni, both of which are necessary if they want to make Dwight happy.

Not only has Dwight been very public about how much he dislikes playing in D'Antoni's system, but he has also said that his priority is to be on a winning team. The Lakers will not be a winning team next year, even with him. They will struggle to make the playoffs again, and might even miss them this time.

I think he is going to Houston. It makes sense from literally every perspective.

Plus, there's the small issue of the $30M more that Dwight gets by staying with the Lakers.

Let me recap: $30M more.

First, I cannot believe you think LA is in a similar situation with Houston right now. A Dwight-ed Houston team is head and shoulders above a Dwight-ed Lakers team. It's not even close. It's mind boggling to think what sort of reasoning you have behind that statement.

Second, when you factor in taxes, Dwight would actually make approximately $2M more playing for a Texas-based team rather than the Lakers. So, you're argument that Dwight would get more money staying for the Lakers is false once you factor in taxes.

Basically, there's no incentive for Dwight to stay in LA except that the city's more fun.

OK, fair point, I forgot about taxes.
I didn't realize the taxes were so different. I think you mean Dwight will make $2M more per year playing in Texas. So, instead of $30M more, guaranteed, by signing with LA, it would be closer to $20M more, guaranteed. Is that right?

No, I mean that after everything has been factored in, Dwight would actually make more money playing for Dallas and Houston than if he were to play in LA.

Also, please explain how we're overrating Houston, and why you think LA is actually comparable to Houston right now.

Houston score a lot of points because they play at a quick pace, not because they're all that efficient. Sure, they're in the top 10 in offensive efficiency, but so are the Lakers. And as I'm sure you know, D'Antoni is a pace oriented coach too and Howard has had issues in his system.

Not to mention you can draw a similarity between how Howard played with Bryant and how he'll play with Harden. Both Bryant and Harden are relatively high usage 2s who essentially relegated their respective point guards, Nash and Lin, to 2 guards who spot up. I think it'd be better for Howard to stick in L.A. and be the center piece now that Kobe's out. I'm not saying L.A.'s got better chances, but I am saying they're more similar than you think.
