I have nothing to go on here but why would Danny Ainge be saying publicly that finding a coach is not a priority? He has stated he isn't going to go after free agents and the Pierce/Garnett trade doesn't go through for another 11 days. So, even though I am sure he will be fielding a bunch of calls for trades and maybe heading to Orlando for the Summer League, wouldn't finding a coach seem like an important thing to do?

Why would he put something like that off? Wouldn't a coach want to get in here and see his young talent in the SL? Wouldn't a coach need time to find assistants, get to know his players, work them out in the summer and get them familiar with their system?

Could it be that the reason is the coach will already be at the Summer League? Could it be the coach is already familiar with the Celtics players and youth after being around them, coaching a few and scouting them? Could it be because Danny already has a coach with a knowledge of the system that has been in place in Boston for years?

Could it be that Danny is going to hire his son, Austin Ainge, a former head coach at the Maine Red Claws and a current scout and Prsonnel Director for the Celtics?

Better possibility is that the guy he'd really like to hire has a job right now.  I'll give you 2 - McHale and Thibs - who, just had his top assistant fired by his GM:

Nick, FlCeltsFan suggested this in a post also.  She mentioned the rumor that Ainge would be coach... When Danny said he would not coach...she wondered if it could be Austin Ainge, as he has experience coaching, has learned the Celtics inside business and scouting, and has excellent connections.   ;)   Since it is a young team and not expected to make a noise this year, I wouldn't be surprised if Austin was named coach.

And...the price would be right.

We're going to have a bunch of D-league players, we might as well have a D-league coach.

I think that would be a bad idea.

I'd be all for Austin being the assistant coach under Larranega, though.

  • Boston Celtics= Championships, nothing less.
I think he'd make Austin earn his stripes via the assitant coaching route. Danny wouldn't put him under that pressure. give him a few years sitting behind the head coach. Get him a good teacher that he can learn from and let him earn his stripes.
"We are lucky we have a very patient GM that isn't willing to settle for being good and coming close. He wants to win a championship and we have the potential to get there still with our roster and assets."

quoting 'Greg B' on RealGM after 2017 trade deadline.
Read that last line again. One more time.

I didn't read FL's post as a rumor, or as a prediction...just as a possible question, sort of musing out loud...

I did think it was an interesting question, though.
