If there is any truth to the speculation the Celtics are looking to do a sign and trade for Smith, I would imagine the rebuild is more of a reload and Ainge is looking for a KG / Ray Allen type summer, and not a much longer process.  With that thinking in mind, I imagine that the draft picks we just got from Brooklyn may be assets that we are looking to flip for the right deal.

If we were to go this route, I wouldn't mind the Celtics going after Josh Smith and/or Al Jefferson.  The question becomes do we have enough assets to get both guys nearly 18M each.

I would like to see the Celtics keep Rondo, Green and Sullinger.  My question, is do we have enough to get both players through a sign and trade.

Here is what we have on our roster...

Kris Humphries   $12,000,000
Gerald Wallace   $10,105,855
Brandon Bass   $6,750,000   2 years
Courtney Lee   $5,225,000   3 years
Avery Bradley   $2,511,432   2 years
Jordan Crawford   $2,162,418   2 years
Fab Melo   $1,311,240   2 years

This gets us a bit over 39M.  In a hypothetical situation, if the Celtics were presented the option to turn these players into Al Jefferson and Josh Smith, do you do it and what else would you give up in terms of draft picks to make it happen?

For a lineup of Rondo-Smith-Green-Sullinger-Jefferson I would toss in a few, maybe all three, of Brooklyn's first round picks we just received as well.  I'm no salary cap rules guru so this may be completely impossible, but for a chance to avoid an all out rebuild I think it would be well worth it.

From the sounds of it, Detroit has already offered Smith a "substantial" 4-year contract. It's not reported to be a max contract, but "substantial" suggest something pretty close to it. Does Smith pass up such an offer to join his buddy Rondo and a much better run franchise?

As for Jefferson, he's almost certainly going to be overpaid. Regardless of his defensive deficiencies, annual 20/10 threats always get overpaid (see: David Lee). Lee is at least a respectable playmaker for his position. There's not much more to like about Jefferson's game. No thanks.

If the Celtics were presented the option to S&T one or both of these guys, it all comes down to salary, and it's looking more and more likely that both of them will get incredibly overpaid.
