Mavericks want Rondo, but Celtics ask for Dirk

There’s been word that Rajon Rondo is not a part of the Boston Celtics tanking..err, rebuilding plan. It’s natural for the teams that actually want to contend to inquire about an All Star, arguably Top five point guard who has already won championships. The main problem for the Mavericks is they don’t have assets to trade. Except one. The one player they would never ever place on the table.
It’s a long shot but you couldn’t blame Danny Ainge for trying. He gave up his two championship cornerstones (even if they’re aging) for bit players and expiring contracts. Perhaps he thought he started a trend. Rondo is definitely an asset, but Dirk Nowitzki? Mark Cuban must’ve thought he he got punked.

What they hell would Ainge at this point want Dirk for??
And to give up a young player like Rondo to bring Dirk in for a few years on a rebuilding team?
If Ainge did this he would be the stupidest GM ever.

What I would guess is that the Mav's front office rang up the Celtics asking about Rondo, since they need a point guard.

Ainge made them an offer they would have to refuse as a bit of a sarcastic rejoinder. No way Cubes trades Dirk--he loves Dirk, and he's committed to keeping him a Maverick until he retires.

This is basically Ainge's way of saying that the Mavericks have nothing to interest his, so they need to stop wasting his time.

I think it is somewhere in between a "sarcastic" response to a Rondo inquiry and Ainge being irrational.

The celtics would trade Dirk for assets.

If Cuban really WENT for it, a Rondo for Dirk trade would allow them to sign Smith and Howard with some financial maneuvering.  I'm too lazy to figure out the financial maneuvering because this will NEVER happen because:

1. Dirk has a no-trade clause

2. Mark Cuban takes loyalty into consideration.

3. At the end of the day if you can trade Dirk for draft picks, you can trade Rondo for draft picks.

I wish we had ownership and management who would never trade the star they drafted that not only won them a championship but rebuilt the franchise.

  Didn't we pretty much have that exact same thing? Other than trading PP when he's getting close to retirement you could write the exact same thing about the Celts.

There's a huge difference between the two situations.  Until this summer, the Cs were trying to contend, and loaded up their roster with mid-salaried veterans on multi-year deals to play with KG and Pierce.  Since their title, Dallas has been in salary clearance mode, hoping to snag a top FA this year and next to build another championship team around a discounted Dirk in his final years.

Dallas also has a reputation as a coveted FA destination, while Boston doesn't.  Boston moved on from their franchise guy's final years because they couldn't reload enough to be a contender again.  Dallas' plan is to reload this year and next around a discounted Dirk.
