Taking a quick break from speculating at all the big moves Ainge might make, I want to address the backup PG issue.

For the past few years, Ainge has tried to address the backup PG role with promising rookies and/or guys who can play other positions. It's understandable, since Rondo is a workhorse, but considering the constant lack of productivity from our bench, I think it's time Ainge takes a step back and actually considers a legitimate backup PG for once. Especially with Rondo coming back from a torn ACL and potentially not returning until the season has already started, I think that only emphasizes our need for a true backup PG.

Brooks was just waived by Houston, and along with guys like Maynor and Udrih, there are some VERY solid backup PGs to be had at a potentially affordable price. I know we're not looking to compete next year, but at the same time we can't be entirely dysfunctional, either. I think all three names I've listed can be both stopgaps for now and long-term solutions for when we compete again.

Not worried about a back-up PG at all. The problem last season is that Doc for whatever reason gave the back-up PG role to the player I least wanted to see in that role, which is Bradley.

And you forget, we actually had a capable back-up PG last year with Barbosa... who also got injured.

Yeah, I have no idea why they kept trying to mold Bradley into a backup PG. As for Barbosa, he had his moments, but I wouldn't go as far as calling him a capable PG. Barbosa practically did no facilitating at all. He's a pure scorer by heart, and his purpose was to come in and be a spark off the bench. Thus, when he was hot, he gave Boston a offensive lift, but when he was not, he couldn't really contribute, and neither could the rest of the team since the C's wouldn't have a legitimate playmaker to facilitate the offense. I know Doc tried to work the minutes around so that Pierce could come in and be a scorer/playmaker when Rondo was off the court, but obviously we don't have that luxury now.

I want someone who can give the team some dribble penetration.

You need to be able to force your opponent's team defense into help situations. To get them out of position, swing the ball and find open shooters (high percentage shots). Without a genuine go-to scorer (or post up threat), that is going to be a challenge for this team especially when Rondo is resting since he is the only guy who currently gives them a consistent dribble drive threat.

Having a strong backup PG who can get into the teeth of the defense should be a priority.

From this perspective I agree. I'd rather find someone who can play with Rondo, and can move the PG role when needed, rather than finding someone for a back-up PG role who's sole job is to come in when Rondo is sitting.

Rondo's height is the biggest issue here, and that's why not many candidates for that role have really interested me much.

For the time being, I'd go after J. J. Redick to bring some shooting and someone who can do a bit of PG, and after that I'd find some cheap guard who can come in and alleviate pressure when needed.

I saw you talking in another thread about your interest in Barea, and I just don't see him and Rondo working all that well... our defense would be too atrocious. Though I can see him working alongside Lee and Bradley, but I'm not sure if I'm willing to spend MLE money for him, maybe sign-and-trade a redundant player for him and a second rounder or something along those lines.

If we don't go after a backup PG and continue our plan of nabbing a combo guard, I agree that JJ Redick is by far the smartest target to get.

I think this Pressey kid will be able to fit the role.

I am concerned about his lack of shooting though but as a pass first guy who can drive he has it.

Pressey has promise; but also is not ready for prime time. Problem is we need a sign and trade to get someone to take some of our contracts. Brooks is OK; but rather sign and trade for Will Bynum (should never have let him go).

I'd go for Udrih. Excellent backup, smart player, good teammate, he would be a good influence on all our new rooks and second year players. He would do a good job as a starter while Rondo is out the first half of the season too.

This is part of the reason why I'd be happy if we ended up with Tyreke Evans on a reasonable deal. He's the on-ball combo guard to end all combo guards, and if his ceiling ends up being 20-5-5... that's gravy.
At least a goldfish with a Lincoln Log on its back goin' across your floor to your sock drawer has a miraculous connotation to it.

Beno has been a consistent and underated player for the past 2 years. Never gonna be a star. Knows his job does a solid job of coming off the bench and playing vital minutes

Great to know someone else sees his very underrated talent. It's unfortunate he's been relegated to struggling small market teams like Sacramento and Milwaukee so far. Whenever I watch him, I'm always amazed at his court vision and basketball IQ. The best thing is that he's fine with not being known. He just comes in and plays sound basketball. There's absolutely nothing to knock about.

Bynum is a solid prospect as well. He can be an explosive scorer as well, which makes him even more enticing.
