Doc and his Ubuntu legacy is slightly tarnished

this is not about X's and O's...it is about his exit and how it was handled...it just didn't feel Ubuntu...was Danny a co-conspirator...maybe...possibly...but...ultimately it is Doc's responsibility...i am a little surprised by the righteous indignation from the Doc camp and directed at people like Bill Simmons...it's do as i say not as i do...or like a politician speaking out of both sides of his mouth...when you are in the public spotlight making $7M per year where 3 billion people on the earth live on $1 or less...then...this goes with the territory...for better or worse...like it or not...and doc knows that...

Doc was always a little bit of a fake. He got such a great deal from the Celtics he owes his entire coaching good fortune to the moves DA made to make him a marquee coach though I don't even think he deserves that. But don't be fooled his position in the league is only because of the opportunity DA gave him to coach the BIG 3. Perhaps Doc actually knows this and that is why he is bailing. He does not want to be exposed by coaching a team that is not loaded with hall of famers.

Way before the truth came out, I questioned Doc's behavior only to be assailed by his apologists. The subsequent events now shows that Doc was always about Doc.

If one of the owners really did come to him and tell him that they were looking to cut costs, and that he was a trade asset, then I'm a lot more sympathetic to Doc.

If instead Danny asked him to oversee the rebuild, and Doc said he'd prefer not to, then I'm more anti-Doc on this one.

I'd agree with all of this.

Whether we ever find out the truth is the real question. But based on the type of guy Doc has been during his tenure here and how he responded to Simmons, I'm going to believe the former is more likely than the latter.

I'm pretty sure the owners didn't come around to that view until pretty late in the whole ridiculous process, whereas Doc was being a jerk about the whole thing for weeks and weeks and weeks.

People are hating just to hate (Simmons included).  Let go of emotions for a bit and you can see that no matter how this came about, in the end it was the best case for all involved (I would still like to see pierce as a Celt) and what's better is that Danny, doc, and the owners are all fine with each other.  Why the fans and media need to make more out of it is beyond me.

We had 9 fun years with Doc and won Banner 17.  Why tarnish it by trying to come up with reasons to prove he is "not a true Celtic" or he "quit on us". 

The whole group from wyc to Jason terry helped the celtics in the past week and they all seem to be happy with where they currently are.  It was one last Ubuntu effort.  Enjoy the next chapter instead of trying to tear down the last one.

I can prove it but I think Doc did DA a favor by going to LAC.   No way KG leaves without Doc leaving.   This opened the door for the breakup.   I think they had an agreement and DA agreed to send his guys to a contender and Doc doesn't have to coach a rebuild. 

I harbor no ill will about Doc right now.   He has not aired the dirty laundry like Ray did.   In fact, Doc did damage control.  I do not care that he turned on Bill Simmons either or the fact that Bill gave it to him.   Bill is a fan.

I think, and we will never know, that DA and Doc had a gentleman's agreement to help DA start the rebuild.   We were a .500 team last year and the window had closed and running it back was not an option for Celtics Management.

I agree. Right now I don't know what really happened. I'm not sure I'll ever know for sure.


I'm just hoping that the "Ubuntu" thing dies. Not what it means, that's all fine and good. But I always thought it sounded dumb.

These things can be iterative too. Doc seems a bit reluctant...so the owners start casting about for opportunities...which makes Doc a little more willing to look around...etc.

By the end of it, it might not be possible to even identify one side as being the primary actor in the decision.

Not saying that I know for sure that this is what happened...but it's the way a lot of business and personal relationships come to an end.

I bolded that part because I always thought Wyc was the more p---ed of everyone. He is the one holding the ball. Doc is gone he could fire Danny and any # of things but it's his baby...so I figured he'd speak first. Doc can't, Danny wont (he's gotta navigate other head offices personel and G.M.'s and just move on) But Wyc...nah...could see it on his face the first time he was  in front of a camera. For a guy who made a lot of money he seemed to not be showing a good poker face.

And while he expressed nothing but appreciation for the job Rivers did with the Celtics, Grousbeck was rather pointed about the process.


“The moves are just rumored,” he said of the aforementioned trade. “I mean, Doc left us, period. Doc left us. No spin will take that away. It was his idea and he left, and we made the best of it.

“We think we’re even with Doc. We think the nine years were nine great years. We would have been happy to continue, but that was not to be. I’m really glad Doc spent nine years here.”

Asked if he was disappointed that there has been some very public debate about how the departure went down, Grousbeck said: “I don’t think anybody thinks there’s two sides to it. I think everybody realizes it’s hard to leave a place where you’ve been nine years, so efforts are made to talk about it different ways, and I don’t have a problem with any of it. I’ve moved on.

“I’ll welcome him back, and I hope we kick the Clippers’ butt. But he’s a champion as far as I’m concerned.”

Celtics make him a $7 million coach but he knows he is not worth that money so he high tails it out of town to a team that can cover his deficiencies.

He was never committed to Boston.
