Rajon Rondo shouldn't be traded until the trade deadline. That's when i'd expect his value to be at its peak for us. Ideally Rondo could return at the start of January, work his way back to full strength and show that he's recovered from his injury.

What should we be looking for in a Rajon Rondo trade:

1. A lottery pick, with loose protection. (Top 3 is understandable, but Top 8-10 would keep us from real value.)

2. A starter, while draft picks are valuable. We can't continue to take on bad contracts who have no future with this team. Someone who is relatively young, but no longer fits what our trading partner wants to do with their franchise. He might be the 3rd or 4th guy in your lineup, but they would fill a hole, and could help us compete.

3. Getting rid of bad contracts, Rondo is our last big-time trade chip and we need to set ourselves up for the future while we still have leverage. Gerald Wallace should be tied to him in every rumor, and Bass/Lee shouldn't be far behind him.

What are YOUR requirements for a Rondo trade?

If Rondo is traded to one of the five worst teams in the league, he is good enough to catapult them up the standings and out of a top five pick. Probably up to somewhere around 10th.

I don't like the idea of trading Rondo for a lottery pick at this point in the year. That should happen just prior or during the lottery or at worst around the trade deadline. But not in the summer or early in the season.

Super-star or no deal, screw the crappy draft picks we'd likely end up with.

I would want a young star in return.

(1) Someone in his early 20s. He won't be as good as Rondo but he will need to be capable of being a major piece of a contending going forward + will be young enough to give Ainge more time to build a superior team around him. Someone like Jrue Holiday.

(2) Or someone less proven but has high upside. Someone like Enes Kanter. Or maybe MKG if you are a believer in him. Something like that.

Cap flexibility and/or mid to late draft picks don't concern me in a Rondo trade. I want star talent. It is all about the star talent coming back.

Bingo.

1. Wait until he comes back from injury. His ACL injury is depressing what is otherwise arguably one of the best trade values in the league.

2. Young players on rookie contracts.

3. First round draft picks. Rondo will make whatever team he goes to good enough that the first rounders will be no better than late lottery, but a first rounder is a first rounder.

4. Financial relief. Wallace and/or Bass need to get off our payroll.
