Andrew Bynum at 10 million a year for 3-4 years...As part of a rebuild strategy. Yes or no?

Yes, he's only 25 years old and when healthy he's dominant. Worth the risk for a top 3 big at his age.

No, Never. Too much risk and we've already got Wallace's contract to burn for 3 years while we tank

Would rather keep the money for multiple free agents like Durant, Marc Gasol, Kevin Love in 2015-16
4 (9.1%)
I'd do it but only guarantee 2 seasons on slightly more money.

'm a fan of a full on tank/rebuild so this is just an idea.
Just a thought about using Bynum as part of a rebuild.
Sign him to a long term deal and let him recover his knee while Rondo recovers. Give him another 9 months to rehab and get back to health. Do whatever it takes to get him back to normal. No need to rush him back. Sit him out another season.
If he recovers then he's a bargain at 10 million a year. If not, he's still probably a decent gamble during a legit rebuilding phase. I'm assuming at worst he'll be a guy that sits out the regular season and warms up to get ready for the playoffs (much like when he was with Lakers).

He's almost forgotten now as a free agent. We're looking at a rich man's Roy Hibbert when healthy. He's still a baby too because he came into the league at 17 years old.
Sign him at a value deal like 10 million a year over 3-4 years while we tank for 2014. Let him sit and recover with Rondo.

In a wishful thinking/perfect scenario, we get lucky and get Jabari or Wiggins or Randle. Go into 2015 with Bynum at 3 more years at 10 million leaving us money to keep Rondo.

2015 starting 5:

Rondo
Free agent SG/draft pick for Jeff Green/Avery+picks.
Jabari/Wiggins
Sully
Bynum

We'd be able to trade Bradley+Green+picks for a good shooting guard (all star level) or we'd have picked up a solid 2 guard with length/size and scoring ability.

Pipe dream for the most part but wondering if Danny would gamble on something like this.
Part of pipe dream is that you'd be able to get Bynum for as little as 10 million. Some team is going to offer him a shorter deal on bigger money I'm assuming.
"We are lucky we have a very patient GM that isn't willing to settle for being good and coming close. He wants to win a championship and we have the potential to get there still with our roster and assets."

I think Bynum will sign for a lot more than, say, 3 years, $30 million.

I'd absolutely give him that deal if Philly would do a S&T, though.  I hate the guy, but that's just a smart gamble.

That is an interesting idea. We don't have the cap space but we could do some type of sign and trade with Philly. The Sixers are reported to not want him, so it probably wouldn't cost much for us to obtain him.

I would want the second through fourth years as either options or non guaranteed.

  • We may as well put Tyrion in at center.
Worth the risk.

You say you hate him, but being willing to give him $13 MM a year, would indicate otherwise.

What sort of contract do you think Bynum will fetch? 4 yr/48mil?

I would be in favor of signing Bynum as I do think it's worth the gamble.

However, to me, it would make no sense to sign Bynum and use him as part of a rebuild.

If you sign arguably the 2nd or 3rd best center in the league, you should be competing, not signing him and then telling him to take his sweet time coming back.

It's like me buying a nice, shiny new car but having to wait 9 months to drive it.

I ain't waiting, I am driving that [dang] car now (lol)

If he gets paid that much it will be late in free agency when some teams with space know they aren't getting anyone else. So I think he could actually end up getting 16-18 a year for maybe two years. Atlanta would be a good option to sign him to a short money contract like that to try and pair with Horford.

This car isn't new, it has just been in an accident. You would wait for it to get repaired before driving it right?

If they could sign him and spend the entire year just building up strength in his knee, and take a slow rehab approach on Rondo, then the team would still effectively be tanking. They would just be doing it with good players injured.

Not worth the risk. In addition to his ridiculous injury risk, he is a serious off-the-court headache as well.

Never.

He is a loser.

Never spend money on a guy that will poison your locker room.

At what point does it cease to become a smart gamble?

4 years for y million dollars

Bynum, if healthy, on the current roster reverses the plan of action from tanking to a 7 or 8 seed.

Bynum is a bargain (health, character issues and all) at $10M... Some team is going to reap the reward of a healthy Bynum.
