Rumors going around that KG retires, sits out a month or 2, then comes back and signs with the LA Clippers. To me, hopes Stern doesnt allow this b/c we cant trade with them so he shouldnt be allow to go there if he does retires. Wow, this offseason is making my head hurt!!!!

No basis in reality.

Unless the Celtics buy out KG or waive him, he can't go elsewhere until after his contract is up (just like Doc).

If KG officially retires, his contract comes off the books, but he can't play in the league for a full season / year unless every team in the league agrees that he can.
You’ll have to excuse my lengthiness—the reason I dread writing letters is because I am so apt to get to slinging wisdom & forget to let up. Thus much precious time is lost.

It'd have to be a "buyout" retirement. We've seen plenty of those in the league though.

Hard to imagine the Celtics agreeing to such a "buyout" retirement if they have reason to believe KG is just gonna go join the Clips, though.

If KG is going to play this year, my guess is the Celtics will want to get value for him this off-season, or they hold onto him, have him play 20-25 minutes a night, and then see if they can get anything at all for him at the deadline.

Oh yeah I agree, I don't see the C's letting KG go for nothing.

To be clear, that's not really a rumor. It's just Marc Stein commenting on what the Clips think is the only way they get him.

Clips, I'm told, now concede there's probably only one way they ever get KG: KG retires, sits out a few months, unretires and signs w/Clips

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
Why not trade him to a team that needs cap relief for a first and a reasonable player on a reasonable contract [like the Jordan situation] and then have them buy him out for 11 million and then he can join the Clips? Would this be allowed?

If we buyout KG for $1 and then he signs with the Clips for the min, the league will really regret not letting the Clips give up talent.

I can't see KG doing that though.

we'd regret it more for not getting anything for him and KG would regret losing $22 mill for the vet min + $1.

never happen

We aren't losing anything if the other option is retirement.

Doc left because they were breaking up the band but the only one who had a smooth landing was..Doc

Where's the rest of the band ???

We do now know Danny wanted to Doc to stay and expected the contract to be honored. The dude looked...pretty bad. I am not a Ainge fan but he looked...not good. I did a post noting the frequent use of "he" and not "we" when referring to Doc's departure plans

Wyc is apparently even less happy but more on a Celtic businessman way than Danny's seemingly deeper personal bond break way.

I thought the folks who were claiming Danny was pushing Doc out because Management didn't wanna pay him was ignoring Bostons lack of attracting assets. Made no sense? Wyc is a businessman. He agreed to the 5 year deal.

In all this mess the only person with a sense of what's coming is Doc. That's pretty sweet.  ::)

So in essence he's like a 12 million dollar trade exception? Theoretically couldn't he be used this way?
