Not only is Smith a better player, but you mentioned efficiency, yet Batum only shot 42% from the field last year.

First of all, Smith is much bigger and should be able to get a lot of higher percentage shots. Second, Batum was dealing with a variety of injuries last year thanks to the fact that the Blazers have no bench whatsoever, and also the fact that Batum is charged with a Lebron-like role on the Blazers. He literally does EVERYTHING for them. If you take away last season's campaign, and he's shooting upwards of 46% for his career. Additionally, his 3P% and FT% is heads and shoulders above Smith's, and he turns the ball over less than Smith despite averaging more assists. Honestly, I could continue and argue that Batum IS the better player.

For now though, I'll leave it at that. I'll give you a pass since Batum is underrated and plays on the other side of the country for a small market.

EDIT: The poster above also makes great points why Smith is NOT more efficient than Batum.

You're not understanding what efficiency means.  It's not overall field goal percentage.  It encompasses three point attempts, 2 point attempts and free throws.  In other words, it's true shooting percentage.  It's a basic concept.  League average true shooting percentage is 54 percent.  Smith has hit that mark once in his career and been at 50 percent the last two seasons.  That's really bad.  His career true shooting percentage is 51.7; again, that's bad.

Batum shot only 42 percent from the field but because he took and made so many threes, his efficiency was much higher, to the tune of 56.6 to Smith's 50.  Batum's career TS% is a sparkling 57.3.

I thought an average TS% is closer to 50%.

It's definitely not closer to 50%.  There is no way a guy like Smith, who shot 50 percent from 2 but only 30 percent from 3 and 51.7 on free throws for a true shooting percentage of 50 is average in terms of efficiency.

Signing Smith would be an epically stupid move.

He's a bad offensive player. Bad jumper, bad 3 ptr, bad FT. Throw in the fact that he is also a volatile personality (dont we already have someone like that?) who is looking for a big contract (which he's not worth) and it spells trouble.  Just because he's Rondo's friend doesnt make it a good idea. I hope this doesnt happen.

Josh smith is the only guy who can gaurd Lebron James one on one. If we can get smith we get him along with rondo who is a heat killer and Jeff green continues to blossom like be did last year dropping 40 on the heat, our team is looking bright, Danny sees this, i see it, the rest of celtics blog is delusional

KG has a career TS% of 54.9, so are you suggesting he is close to average?

Guard Lebron one on one? Sure. Maybe he'll slow him down a little. Doubt he'll stop him. But I'm pretty sure He'd have trouble scoring on Lebron, just like the rest of the celtics team.

I might be too. We could be a problem with a healthy Sully and Rondo. Will Barbosa return? He could be an important piece as well. More than anything, I wonder if KG would stay. Others have a point - he is definitely loyal enough to consider sticking it out to retire here. And in hindsight, he was a beast in the playoffs. And Green may be Heat killer 2.0.

Add Smith to this core, draft any one not from Duke, and you're looking at heavy favorites in the East right now. Holla.

If KG does decide to stay, I can't see him playing the 5.  He needs to move back to the 4, which is going to conflict with us potentially getting Smith.  Maybe KG could hold up at 5 one more year but that's a big question.

KG at the 5 and smith at the 4 is a great defensive front court, wed still need a Backup center whos essentially going to be 6th man Center because KG isnt going to lodge big minutes if he comes back to the celtics. I just would love to see Smith and Jeff green on the court together with rondo. That is a great young trio of players forget the shooting bs, lebron was just as bad as a shooter as josh smith is now, theres plenty of guys who work on there shot and shot selection that is workable. Talent isnt. Josh smith, besides lebron James , and rondo(rare) are the only guys who can average or come close to averaging a triple double with ease every night. We would have to get shooters. In which, last time i checked every team looks to add shooters. All im saying is, get josh smith asap. Dont give him the max, because i know he is willing to take less than te max only for the celtics because of his boy and hes always wanted to play for the celtics. And if KG stays, there is no worries of Smith's attitude. Win - win or c's , will be a good team next year, a piece or two away from championship material. All rests on Greens development and rondos knee.
