I guess I'm somewhat torn.  There's definitely the risk that you'd be overpaying for Smith, but, mostly, I think I'd be very excited if we managed to land Josh Smith without giving up much (or any) of our young core.

He and Rondo would be lots of fun together.

C:    N. Vucevic/K. Olynyk/E. Davis/C. Jefferson

I don't understand the fascination with Josh Smith.

DeAndre Jordan
Josh Smith
Jeff Green
Avery Bradley
Rajon Rondo

That team's spacing and FT% makes me cringe.
If you surround them with some shooters somehow though how do you like it then? It is athletic as hell and would be a lot of fun to watch.

Those who are surprised please raise your hands?

Hand? More like fist...
In the summer of 2017, I predicted this team would not win a championship for the next 10 years.

3 down, 7 to go.

Noooooo. I hope this is BS. This would make the C's nothing more than a 5 seed for the forseable future. The C's would also have the worst shooting starting 5 ever.

I've a question

Why are we "overpaying" Josh Smith?

I'm reading we can offer him 15mil, when a max deal is 17ish.

Why are we overpaying a 27 year old guy, who avg 18/8/8 in the playoffs, but paying a 36 year old Paul Pierce 15.3 is not?

Serious question.

Athletic teams with small basketball IQs (outside of Rondo) don't do a lot for me.

It would be a fun team to watch on defense, but offensively, there's a whole lot of bad decision making there (again, outside of Rondo).

I think another issue moving forward would be to have a 5 that can stretch the floor a bit.  With JG and JS as your 3/4 I think they would benefit a lot with a 5 that had some range.  It would open up the driving lanes for them and allow them to use their athleticism to get to the hole.
I really hate the idea of stretch 5's. Give me a big, 7 foot, rebounding, down in the trenches, defensive big man any day over a stretch 5. I would rather rely on Sullinger extending his range and Green being proficient at threes to space the floor over a stretch 5 any day.

Honestly, I keep forgetting how good of a shooter sullinger is.  That might be better I guess.  Just puts a lot of pressure on him.  It would be great to have KG back for one more year to tutor Sully.

Surround them with shooters? You mean we'll get an exception and be allowed to have more than 5 guys on the floor? ;)

A team where you can't play your five best guys together because no-one can make a shot with regularity from outside of 15 feet is not a team that's put together well.

Not to mention that three of those five guys shoot free throws in the .600s or worse.

I'm split on the deal, but if in a couple years you wanted to move in a different direction, wouldn't a 29 year old Josh Smith be fairly easy to move?

For those posters saying that any players for the Celtics would have to go to the Hawks, know that, I am pretty sure, Smith has to be sign and traded for the TPE, as his salary has to fit with the exception for it to go through. Now maybe a simultaneous trade of the China 3 with a future 1st and second 2nd rounder also goes through so Atlanta can cut them and not take on payroll, but I think that's the only way players would be headed Atlanta's way.

Also, if this is true, the first year salary for Smith would be $15 million a year, so not max money.

Not any easier than a 28 year old Josh Smith, and the Hawks have seen a world of pain trying to do it.

We pay Paul a special tax for sentimentality.

What the hell are we doing? We're supposed to tank, not become the treadmill Atlanta Hawks.

Wouldn't you rather see the Celtics continue to compete rather than just suck? Remember, tanking to get into the lottery is a crap shoot and rarely ever works (especially for the Celtics.)

See 1997 and 2007.

I see where you're coming from, but next year's draft is perhaps the best draft class since 2003. I think it's worth a try to tank and try to score through it.

What are we going to have to pay him? Anybody have any idea. I'm100% opposed if it is max money.
