Consider the departure of Doc Rivers Phase II of the Celtics’ slow dismantling, which began last summer with Ray Allen leaving Boston. Phase III will come this week, when Boston must either trade Paul Pierce or decide to buy him out. They have until June 30 to inform Pierce of such a move.

As for the rebuilding sure to follow the dismantling, that is contingent on what happens with Pierce. If the Celtics can unload Pierce to a team with enough cap space to absorb his salary, they will get a trade exception worth Pierce’s salary, or $15.3 million. And if that happens, the plan is already in place. According to a source, the Celtics have a sign-and-trade offer ready for Atlanta forward Josh Smith that would be the top priority in free agency.

I know this really shouldn't come as much of a surprise, but it looks like the Pierce to Cavs rumor is based partially on the fact that the C's would use the Cavs TE to land Josh Smith.

http://prosportsdaily.com/Headlines/ExternalArticle?articleId=255884

So this got me thinking. Do the Celts even really need the Cavs? Why don't they just deal directly with the Hawks?

In other words, couldn't the Celts just pick up Pierce's option and just deal him to Atlanta for Smith, after the July 1st free agency period begins.

OR, maybe the Celts could just deal a combination of Jeff Green and Brandon Bass for Smith. That way, Pierce can retire a Celtic and I think a team of Rondo, Pierce, Smith and KG could definitely contend.

cool, I just almost posted this in the proper forum, but I guess I'll talk about it here too

my question is who are we signing and trading?
can getting Josh Smith keep KG semi happy? Because that's not really 'tanking'...it's going young.

I'm saddened by the idea that we'll probably have to trade JG. Which I think is a solid mistake.

Atlanta wouldn't want Bass/Lee/etc would they? Of course, unless DA put that unprotected pick on them.

The theory is that you dump Pierce onto the Cavs for a trade exception and 2nd rounders... then send that trade exception + young assets for Josh Smith in a sign and trade.  Probably would have to give up something minimal like Avery Bradley to make it worth Atlanta's time.

I think we would probably trade the TE if we do the PP cleveland deal

Probably Josh Smith for TE and a 1st rd pick, they were asking for a pick at the deadline, C's now have an extra pick.

PG: Rondo
SG: Bradley
SF: Green
PF: Smith
 C: KG

I see your point, maybe because trading with the Cavs gives us 2 draft picks as well and then we can flip that TE to Atl for Josh

Don't see Boston giving up Bradley in the deal. Likely a future pick and a $15mill trade exception
*CB Miami Heat*
Kyle Lowry, Dwayne Wade, 13th pick in even numbered rounds, 18th pick in odd numbered rounds.

How do you feel about this? I think if we can essentially get Josh Smith and a first (or two seconds) for Pierce it is a steal. I also think Smith fits the style we want to play with Rondo and could learn a lot from a half season of KG while the C's attempt to get value for him.

My only hesitation would be replacing Pierce with Smith then becoming a mid seeded team that is stuck at the five seed for a bunch of years in a row without hope of moving up.

What else would Atlanta want for Josh Smith besides the TPE? Would we give them the rights to one of the picks we got from Pierce?

If we did this move would we move Bass, Terry and Lee in order to get under the luxury tax. Would the owners pay the tax for a Rondo, Bradley, Green, Smith, Sully core? If the C's are willing to spend and have high hopes why does every report indicate they want to go cheap with their next coach?
DKC:  Rockets
CB Draft: Memphis Grizz
Players: Klay Thompson, Jabari Parker, Aaron Gordon
Next 3 picks: 4.14, 4.15, 4.19

Meh, I am not really a Jeff Green fan. I think he's a good player but if we could deal him for Smith, I would do it in a heartbeat.

If I had to choose between letting Pierce retire as a Celtic or dealing Jeff Green, I pick the latter.

Also, I would consider dealing KG, Bradley and Crawford for Gasol and Steve Blake and land either Korver or Redick with the MLE.

I think this lineup would be nasty

PG-Rondo/Blake
SG-Lee/Terry/Redick (maybe)
SF-Pierce/Korver (maybe)
PF-Smith
C-Gasol

Also included in that theory is that he's a free agent.  Atlanta would rather get something for him instead of nothing.

I don't understand the fascination with Josh Smith.

DeAndre Jordan
Josh Smith
Jeff Green
Avery Bradley
Rajon Rondo

That team's spacing and FT% makes me cringe.

I'M THE SILVERBACK GORILLA IN THIS MOTHER... AND DON'T NONE OF YA'LL EVER FORGET IT!

KP / Giannis / Turkuglu / Jrue / Curry
Sabonis / Brand / A. Thompson / Oladipo / Brunson
Jordan / Bowen

So if we keep Jeff Green somehow and land Josh, i am fine with that.  I am not super excited, but at least we land a younger player with talent.  If it doesn't work out in a year or two with Josh Smith, he is still a decent trade chip.
