You have to wonder if some guys just get tired of Danny's act and that has played a role in Doc and Ray leaving.

Well, I am not sure if it's his "act", or if he was just doing his job...but I absolutely think Ray left because Danny kept trying to trade him (and rightfully so).

But I don't think Danny had anything to do with Doc leaving.  Doc left because it was a better opportunity to win, and coach a guy he has always wanted to coach, rather than staying around as the team rebuilds. 

I also think Doc leaving was a mutual decision.  He is getting paid more money than the C's want to pay when they are rebuilding. 

I just don't think the C's got hosed in either case here.  They lost Ray, because they decided it was time to move on from him, and then when they changed their mind, he was ready to think about himself (as he should).  And with Doc, it was just time.

You are probably right. My problem is I have never been a fan of Danny Ainge.

  I still don't view losing Ray as much of a loss. I think there would be a boatload of people complaining about his being on the roster for the next few years if he'd re-signed with the team.

Loyalty in professional sports is an abstract concept that only exists among fanbases.

In the real world, athletes/coaches are as "loyal" as their paychecks and surrounding teammates - but mostly their paychecks. That goes both ways - management is loyal to players to a point, unless they're making too much or a better player comes along (See: Danny trying to trade Ray multiple times, Perk, though that was a good deal...etc.)

Paul was going to ask for a trade if Ray/KG didn't arrive here. All this "I am a Celtic!"  garbage is all true - until a better situation comes along.

I still love Doc/Ray...both were huge parts of a championship run I will always be grateful for, but at no point did I ever see them as these loyal soldiers to the organization. No player or coach will ever be that.



Off Topic: The one player in the last decade who I think genuinely loved being a Celtic who probably would've taken paycuts to stay was Antoine. He seemed very upset at being traded after being a Celtic for so long.

Doc said he'd stick with the rebuild an  that he was showing loyalty and not talking about it. Then he literally jumps on a plane and goes to La. HOSED.

Ray Allen we offered him twice the money, more minutes was on our team for 5 years left fpr our heated rival. When the hell does that ever happen? HOSED

I do think the Ray thing was kind of a sucker punch... just because it was Miami more than anything. Plus less money.  But Doc definitely wasn't.

The thing about all this is we knew the rebuild was coming.  According to ESPN it was coming every year after 2010 basically.  Every year we were old and washed up.

Ray left on his own terms. We did everything we could to have him stay, but the bridge was apparently burned on his side with those trade talks, in which Danny is doing a good job if not for Memphis pulling out of the deal (he could have been OJ Mayo, man).

Doc leaving, well, not hosed either. He could have left anyway, not coach and be on TV. Or he'll coach a rebuilding team and get owed a ton of money. At least we got a 1st rounder for him.

The thing is though that Ray didn't flip us the bird on the way out. He got no respect shown his way from the FO with all those trade rumors. We burned that bridge, not the other way around. Yeah he passed up more money and minutes (and a NTC) to go to our rival, but they showed they wanted him more. You can't keep insulting a guy by trying to trade him (basically saying he is the weak link) and then expect him to come running back out of "loyalty" when better teams come calling.

I'll give you the Doc thing just because he did make a big deal about showing loyalty, only for us to find out he never intended on sticking it out and in the NBA its not as common for coaches to leave for better teams. But still he was only half the problem there. The FO knew about the situation so if he HOSED us so did they.

We let doc go to the clippers, because we are a borderline playoff team built around 40 year olds.  It's time to tank... No use paying 7 million a year for a babysitter.

Hell yeah it was about holding a grudge and rightfully so. We tried to trade him regularly. If I'm Ray that says to me that I'm obviously not that wanted. So why resign when Miami clearly has a better shot at a title and are actively pursuing him because they want him? Money isn't a factor for a guy like Ray who has played so many years. Loyalty? Where was that when he was all but traded for OJ Mayo?

It wasn't about worrying about being traded, it was about not wanting to be with an organization that obviously felt on a number of occasions that they'd be better off without him.

We tried trading him every year.  2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012. In 2012 he actually was told he had been traded for OJ Mayo, but Memphis backed out at the last second.  Ray was a trade chip to this franchise as far back as 2009.  We just never found a good deal for him.   What "no trade clause" are you talking about.  He was underappreciated by management, the fans and his teammates.  So he bailed.  Dude's a champion.  He made a wise decision.  A guy of his talents doesn't belong on a fringe playoff team... he belongs in the closing seconds of Game 6 of the NBA Finals where he can nail dagger three pointers and save his team's season.
