I was pretty much joking ... though I still think he deserved a better shot last season, but whatevs.

Good decision for Darko. The NBA hasn't worked out well for him. I think he will be much happier playing pro ball in Europe than he would be angling for another NBA job.

Short answer is: they needed a big and Darko had an incredible workout for them.  Article's well worth a read though.  Amazing to see that D-Wade was originally seen as a late lottery pick.
