How can I not be sentimental? Bird retired when I was 5 and Pierce was drafted when I was 11. He is a huge part of what the Celtics are to me. I think he should be able to dictate how and when he wants to leave the team.

If he asks to be traded to a contender, I can't imagine Ainge wouldn't listen.

Routing for a certain team over all others IS sentimentality in its purest form. We all have a reason to like the Celtics that is not related to their style of play or this season's on-court achievements.

Paul Pierce, like Russell, Havlichek, Heinsohn, Cowens, Bird etc. is a part of my life because all he did in his pro career was battle for my banners. Heck, I'm even still a little mad at Cousy for that embarrassing Cincinnati stint.

It's true that Pierce could do the honorable thing and opt out of his contract, but I couldn't think of any player in the league that is more deserving of a $15M paycheck for a diminished role.
