I'd be okay if this is a pick from this year's draft.
We could get somebody like Withey or Noqueira with the #25.
I would be totally disappointed if its from this year's draft.
Honestly, I think the "weak draft" / "strong draft" thing is overrated.
It makes a big difference if you're picking in the top 5, less so in the top 10, and very little difference outside of that.
This draft is actually quite deep when you're talking about the 20-40 range. A #25 in this draft might actually be better than a #28 or #29 in next year's draft.
I think you're right on. People generally use "strong"/"weak" as shorthand to refer to the number of possible franchise players.
But it's obviously more complex than that.
Chad Ford' tier rankings, which just came out, show this. He has zero players this year in Tiers 1 and 2, twelve in Tiers 3 and 4 and a whopping 26 in Tier 5.
This means that in his view, picks 13-38 are completely flat in terms of available player quality.
Kind of a bummer, when you think about it. We have pick 16, which doesn't project to be all that more valuable than picks in the late 30s.
And, we actually had picks 32 and 39 but traded them (along with 45) for Courtney Lee.
