Doc Rivers never planned to be a part of the Celtics’ rebuilding process, and the club was basically aware of that fact when he signed his latest contract, a source told the Herald yesterday. That person further insisted the coach did not initiate the process that may yet send him to the Clippers for compensation, though that possibility seemed to be growing more distant last night

Quote
According to a person with knowledge of the situation, Rivers was deciding between returning to the Celtics and stepping away from the game when the club asked him if he’d be interested in any of the coaching jobs that were opening around the league. Rivers was said to have no interest in the Nets, who had fired his friend Avery Johnson during the season

Does this change anybody's opinion on Doc?

Funny how it also states that Doc never initiated these talks but rather was approached by Boston management.

Or perhaps a more cynical view, are these reports just getting leaked now to save face because both sides know the league will probably not let this deal happen?

Seems like a story leaked to the Boston media from the Celtics to paint Doc in a poor light and make the decision to let him go that much easier on the management team. Makes Doc look bad and the Celtics look good.

In a way, I think it does the opposite. It's like you knew all along that he didnt want to go through a rebuild process. And while he never approached DA and said he was ready to go, DA appeared to believe now was the time for the rebuild and started looking for ways to get the most out of it.

Don't think im just taking sides here and im just supporting Doc. Im let down by the whole process and until this came to light I was resigned to throw Doc into a furnace. But in light of this, it appears Doc was considering coming back and Danny went shopping. So I dont know. As a Celtics fan, im let down from the whole thing. It tarnished my image a bit of why I love this team so much.

well it look bad to promise a guy 7 million a year to do nothing,  knowing he doesn't want the job,  seems a waste of time an money on every bodies part.

he is too wishy washy ,  real men make decision ,  and stick by it.

he is not to be trusted

I would never hire him, ,  just the way I feel

either man up an do the work or leave.......plenty people would love to make a miillon dollars to coach ,

Rivers needs to return to earth

How exactly does it paint a bad picture of Doc? I think he makes him look better by explaining he never forced his way out of town or any of the such.

There's no two ways around this. It makes him look much better. Ainge, too. Total genius on Danny's part. Doc wanted to stay with us and run it back with his guys. Otherwise, he would just not coach and do TV. Danny smartly signs him to a long term deal with VERY STRONG non-compete language. OK, so if its only 2-3yrs and Doc quits, no loss. We get to that point and Doc says "I'm done". BUT, Danny says "Doc, if you want to keep coaching for a title, i think we can work something out that works for both of us...".

At this point in time whatever comes out is much more likely to be spin than truth, start there.

This is a TOTAL PR spin. It's funny because the explanation that was given is almost exactly what I said they would say-in another forum post.

This does not paint Doc in a worse light. It actually makes it a little easier for him to come back and it would be like he's doing Ainge and the Celtics a favor because Ainge knew this wasn't what he wanted.

I'm not even going to bother. I have Clipper trade fatigue. Let me know when it's all over, and the CB muppet squad is finished spending the obligatory 2-3 days over-reacting and bashing everyone involved without any basis in fact.

... how are we reading this article and coming to the complete OPPOSITE conclusion?  Weird.

Anyways though, the fact that I've had to consider spin, sourcing, intentional leaks, messaging, etc with all these stories makes me just not care about them anymore.  "Sources" are tiring.

It would probably really help if Doc and Danny started talking in front of cameras and trying to come clean, even if they try and spin it to make themselves look good under the circumstances. The mix of spoken words and body language while under the microscope would probably reveal a lot more than these leaks from "sources". Even though we all know they are great actors and can lie with ease.

It would be nice if this was over one way or another.

It would be nice if the participants started speaking to the fans instead of hiding out hoping to spin the story however they need to through typed words and talking heads speaking for them.

How do you know?

Seriously, there has never been a single shred of evidence, a reliable source, or anything credible that indicated that Doc initiated these trade talks. Every single published source has said that either the Clippers or the Celtics management started it, Doc has never been portrayed as the one who started it.

So why do so many people hyperventilate and call him a traitor? Why do people selectively trust some anonymous sources and not others?

Considering the evidence is pretty overwhelming that Doc had nothing to do with this, I think we can feel pretty safe assuming that until someone actually comes out and says that Doc did anything.
