Quote from: Adrian Wojnarowski
The Celtics and Rivers planned to reach a final resolution in the next few days, sources said.

1. I'd be shocked if Doc comes back to coach after all that happened in the last week.

2. The Celtics need to get going on a search for a new head coach if Doc Rivers isn't coming back.  The best candidates are quickly finding jobs elsewhere.

Combine those two things and I wouldn't be at all surprised if within the next day or two we see an announcement "Doc Rivers Will Not Return as Celtics Coach."  In fact, I really can't see any other way it can go at this point.
You’ll have to excuse my lengthiness—the reason I dread writing letters is because I am so apt to get to slinging wisdom & forget to let up. Thus much precious time is lost.

I wouldn't be shocked if Doc is willing to return so long as Ainge promises not to waive Pierce.

Doc should demand to come back. No point giving up $21 million.

He should say "either fire me or keep me".

I think Danny is okay with him coming back, the question is Wyc?

I'm guessing no, but Danny might be able to persaude him.

if Doc stays, then what about everything else?

the only way we move forward is with a new game plan
the game plan will not change unless ALL the big 3 are gone. I fear if we even keep one, we'll try to make someone else play a role. example: if PP stays, now Bass has to be KG with the pick and pop. PP leaves, now JG has to be PP. not a fan.

By all reports it sounds like Doc hasnt really worn out his welcome with the Celtics organization over all this. Multiple people have reported that Ainge would welcome back Doc back.

The harddest part for Doc? Will the team feel the same way. You can't go into a locker room preeching Ubuntu and togetherness when you were very publicly trying to give up on your players. I don't think Doc can go back to that, no matter how much respect the veterans have for him.

In terms of the fans, we'd probably get over it pretty quickly if the team is winning. If we are a .500 team, whats the point of wasting 7 million dollars a year on your coach. As a diehard Celtic fan, I could careless if Doc comes back or goes, I just want a competitive basketball team next year if we decide to run it back. However I'm more than okay with blowing this team up and watching some young and exciting basketball while we suck for a couple years.

Bill Simmons is pretty admanent that Doc Rivers will coach the Celtics anymore. Even saying he might return to broadcasting if he can't coach the Clippers.

I can't see why the Celtics would fire him - they'd still have to pay him.

I'd imagine Doc is looking to see how much money he has to give up in a buy out to be allowed to pick his next team.
2025 Draft: Chicago Bulls

PG: Chauncey Billups/Deron Williams
SG: Kobe Bryant/Eric Gordon
SF: Jimmy Butler/Danny Granger/Danilo Gallinari

I think Doc will be back.

Media loves him fans and players love him.

It might be skeptical at first but Doc has always appeared to be a blue collar 110% guy. He will give it his all as usual.

I don't think Ainge would make that kind of promise, the only thing Ainge could promise is he'll try to add pieces to make another run.

I think Doc could live with Ainge trading Pierce for pieces in an attempt to make the team better.  I'm not sure he could be satisfied with just waiving him to save money.

As others have speculated, the way this may have gone down is that LA approached Danny with the idea, Danny ran it by Doc and KG to get their input and their OK to pursue. Doc and KG simply said 'OK' let's see what happens.

I do not think this scenario precludes Doc and KG from returning to the C's.  I think they are grown-ups and can work this through just fine (if they want to be back).

KG
PP
Sully
Rondo
Green
Bradley
JET/Terry/Bass/Wilcox/Barbosa/Randolph/Crawford
#16

Who knows?  There could be 50+ wins in this group if Rondo comes back strong and Green/Sully/Bradley take it up a notch.

I look forward to the Clippers first or second round exit next year.  They needed KG and the structure he provides.

And I look forward to welcoming Doc back and watching the Celtics make the ECF.
