If this deal goes down, do you build around Rondo/Green/Jordan?  Or do you move Rondo and completely break the team down?

-I would like to revisit the Rondo/Melo trade to the Hornets for MKG, Sessions, and the #4 pick.

Buidling Blocks:

Jeff Green
DeAndre Jordan
#4 pick Alex Len (or Zeller)
Sullinger
MKG
Bradley
#16 pick
potential lottery pick in 2014

Trade Chips:

Pierce
Bass (3 years left)
Sessions (2 years left)
Butler (2 years left)

So you roll with Sessions and Bradley at PG for one year.  Potentially could draft Schroeder for future PG.  Still have to figure out what to do with Pierce.  You get cap relief becase Butler and Sessions just have 2 years left.  So there is a possible deal to make at the 2015 trade deadline or to sign someone that summer.

2014:

PG: Sessions  Bradley  Schroeder(16)
SG: MKG
SF: Green  Butler
PF: Sullinger  Bass
C: Jordan  Len

That team would be young enough to be a lottery team with the hopes of getting a big time wing player.  Then you would be looking at:

2015

PG: Schroeder   Sessions(expiring)
SG: #4 pick  Bradley
SF: MKG   Butler(expiring)
(Green 6th man-both forward spots)
PF: Sullinger  Bass
C: Jordan  Len

Why would CHA trade MKG and the #4 pick? That's their future. And they already have Walker.

Rondo's the best player in the deal by far.  why would we give him up for that package of mediocrity?

If the Celtics can lose enough salary in the next few days with trades, Bill Simmons is saying that they might make a run at Josh Smith, Rondo's good friend. That doesn't sound like the Celtics would be looking to move Rondo but more like they would be trying to build a future around him.

Also, there have been reports that the reason KG, Pierce and Doc would want to be together in LA is because the Celtics want to rebuild around Rondo and his game and not try to bring back the same crew as last year.

I know the prospect of Smith in Boston isn't particularly liked, but I like it. Is he a drain on the cap? Yeah. Do we need a shooter? Yeah. But we can always get an MLE guy like Matt Barnes, or, like I've been saying, try and get Gordon Hayward.

Why ? The point of rebuilding is filling out the roster with a proper starting 5 with above average to star players and then putting role players around them. We already covered pg and sf with very good deals why mess with that ?
The best route is what danny has in mind , trade for pics , go after a third guy who's pretty good (J-smith or millsap) , tank next year hope for a good draft pick and BAM you are competing again. We wouldn't be contenders but I could see us where golden state is right now.

If Celtics are going to rebuild, then I would rebuild all the way.

Trade Rondo for MKG and Len?  Yes, get two quality young supporting cast guys with size and tank it bad enough to get a top 4 pick next year.

Why would the Bobcats do it?  Rondo gives their fans something to see as progress?  How many lottery picks can they keep making and still be terrible?  Rondo gives them a chance to finally start winning some games.

Let the Bobcats be a 30 to 40 win team every year.  The Celtics need to be a 20 win team in 2014 so they can start winning in 2015 and 2016.

If we could get bad enough this year by trading Rondo, how good would this team be with a top 4 pick next year?  Imagine Andrew Wiggins or Marcus Smart at guard or Jabari Parker or Julius Randle at SF?

Plus you have expiring contracts and multiple draft picks to make deals at the deadline.

2015:

PG: Schroeder   Sessions(expiring)
SG: (top 4 pick)  Bradley
SF: MKG   Butler(expiring)
(Green 6th man-both forward spots)
PF: Sullinger  Bass
C: Jordan  Len

If any value can be had for a Top 10 PG coming off major ACL surgery, yeah... it would be the smart move.

I guess if all we got for KG was Deandre and a 1st, we should look into flipping DeAndre for cap space and another pic (someone mentioned we could send him to Portland for the #10).  I'd try to get a draft pick for Pierce... like send him to the Cavs for a late 1st rounder... or maybe you could send him to Dallas for the #14 and expiring.  Then, if the value is there... I'd try to trade Rondo for a high pick.

For example, could you use Rondo to shed another salary?  Rondo + Jason Terry to Orlando for the #2 pick and Turkaglu's expiring?  Would Orlando hang up the phone?

Anyhow, bottom line is that this team isn't contending for a title next season no matter what we do... sans trading for Chris Paul and Dwight Howard.  So it's probably as good a time as any to dump everyone for cap space, young talent and lots and lots of draft picks.  Embrace the tank and lock up a top 5 pick int he 2014 draft.  Even if we miss out on Wiggins, there will be some serious talent taken in the first 5 picks of the 2014 draft... we'll have lots of assets, lots of cap space... and we can have plenty of chips to build a franchise.  If we play our cards right, we'll be in the playoffs again by 2018 and potentially a contender in 2020.

with rondo out half the season, we have a legit way of losing games next season while keeping an all-star player.

I doubt we trade for Josh Smith. I think adding Smith to the core we have (had) then it made some sense. Adding Smith to a rebuilding team is bad for us and bad for Smith. He's 27 and probably doesn't want to wait 2-3 years to contend. Truth be told I expect Smith to be a Laker next year.

With Doc and KG gone I expect Rondo to be traded either before the draft or at the deadline this upcoming season.

Yeah, I'm not one for losing on purpose, as that is dishonest, but there's nothing wrong with rebuilding and going young.

I wouldn't be opposed to gutting almost the entire roster. Doc, KG, Pierce, Terry, Lee, Bass, Rondo...gone.

If we could get the #2 pick and an expiring for Rondo, I'd do it immediately. We could get McElmore or Noel, not bank on Rondo's ACL (believe me, I've torn three...it's never the same after one), suck enough to get a high pick in a stacked draft, and save cap space for a big FA. Hopefully, though, we can get a 2014 1st out of the LAC deal, then we'd have TWO 1sts in 2014, with one of them probably being top 5.

Imagine building around:

Bradley
Green
Sully
Noel/McElmore
2014 picks

I'd take that.

The undervaluing of Rondo in this thread has been quite impressive.

If we hadn't tried to lose on purpose, the 2008 title and our 3.5 year window of contention would have never happened.

We were intentionally throwing games in 2007.
