I mean you could have just signed for a 2 year contract if you didn't want to go through a rebuild? You could have said no to that clause disallowing you to coach another team if you weren't ALL IN with the Celtics. What gives..I'm a huge fan and all but I just don't get it...

What "clause disallowing you to coach another team"?

Doc's 5 year contract with the C's has a "Non compete clause", meaning for the duration of the contract, he wouldn't be able to coach an NBA team. He could go to broadcasting and any other field but he can"t coach any other NBA team until his contract expires.

At least it gives Danny a little more control over any trade (not that anyone actually wants Doc)

To me it feels like Doc is choosing LA's core of Paul/Blake/Crawford over Rondo/Green/Sully and I bleed green over these things. I think our roster has a better shot at a title next year than LAC does!

This brings us to why the thread title is faulty.  Danny wants to re-build, or is ready.  This is Danny and Doc working amicably together on a solution that benefits Doc and the Celtics both, without completely p---ing of KG or even Pierce.  Everyone comes out okay if this goes through.

And if it doesn't go through we run it back.  The most disappointed person in that scenario will be Danny, but if we stay healthy he could be pleasantly surprised.  And kudos to him for not taking a crappy deal.

Dude it's simple.  Boston wants to tank.  Doc doesn't want to coach a team trying to lose.

It's totally supported by the opinions of 90% of this forum. Everybody here is saying "fire doc!"; wasn't there just a thread on it yesterday? The hate levels are so high that no team would ever want him. (according to you guys)

i don't think this was doc's original idea.  I'm of the persuasion that Danny's trying to get trade value for Pierce, and has felt that way since before we even got to the playoffs and was confirmed in that notion with our first round exit.  Pierce leaves, Garnett will want to leave as well.  If both leave, Doc doesn't want to go through the full-blown rebuilding effort.  Doc right now is going with whatever management gives him.  So if Danny is going full-bore to move on without our old core, and Doc doesn't want to be part of the rebuilding effort, then maybe the LA situation will be amicable for all Boston parties involved.

This starts with what Danny wants.  I'm sure if the core came back, Doc's going to be on the bench, no questions asked, and probably his more preferred destination.  Doc doesn't want to appear like he's going against the organization.
Play to win.  Always.

Bingo.  Danny's taking the long view, like GMs are supposed to.  He doesn't think we can win another title with this roster, and 2014 is supposed to be an excellent draft, so he thinks the time to rebuild is now.

Doc, KG, and Pierce want to win now, like coaches and players are supposed to.  They want no part in a rebuild, and they'll fight to win as much as possible.  Unfortunately at this point the ceiling in Boston is probably around 45 wins and a 2nd round exit, which is just about exactly the worst place for a franchise without an up-and-coming core to be.

Looking into this deal makes total sense for everyone involved.  No comic book good guy/bad guy narratives are necessary.

First of all, you said "you guys" when you meant "us guys". Secondly, your 90% number is far from accurate. Thirdly, what does the opinion of some people here (even if it's a majority) have to do with reality?

No, I mean you guys because I don't really care about Doc. Everyone else appears to be vehemently against him and obviously, you guys think your opinions count. And I'm willing to bet that if many of the people here hate Doc here, there's gotta be at least one person in the Clippers organization who also hates him. How can a coach be hated by a huge majority of his own fanbase yet get welcomed into another team which would give up two first-round draft picks for him? No way!

If everyone here thinks Doc is a perfect coach and wants to keep him, then so be it. There's a reason 44 people didn't want him back. Why should the Clippers want this "scrub coach" for 7mil/yr?
