Now that the NBA’s prime coaching pool is shrinking by the day as Doc Rivers contemplates his Celtics future, Danny Ainge has no choice but to consider a backup plan if his coach of the last nine seasons leaves.

Two league sources with direct knowledge of the situation confirmed yesterday that if Rivers does indeed leave, former Clippers coach Vinnie Del Negro will receive serious consideration as his replacement.

Seriously?!? I guess we'd try and tank so good choice? Lol

I can hear the conversation:

Reporter, on phone with assistant to the assistant GM: "So if Doc leaves will they hire Del Negro?"

ATTAGM: "I didn't say that"

R: "Would he not be under consideration at all?"

ATTAGM: "I didn't say that"

R: "OK, then, so Del Negro is being considered, I'm going to quote you on that."

ATTAGM: "Seriously?"

R, typing: "Del Negro is under SERIOUS consideration..."

There is a very large, very vocal group at this site that truly can't stand Doc as a coach and want him out of town.

As my old grandma used to love to tell me, be careful what you wish for, it might actually come true.

This rumor had to be from a lakers writer or exec who wants to see Celtics fans squirm.

I guess if you are really trying to tank he might be the best choice, since he will cost you wins along the way.

Or just be cheap? Yeah I have no interest in Del Negro.

If you want to go cheap, hire a long time assistant waiting for his shot.  (Ewing or Shaw comes to mind)

I've done my best to resist panicking about all these Doc rumors, but this Del Negro stuff is too much. I'm still hoping for the best, but I'm a little concerned now.

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
I know you guys are joking about tanking, but our team would be wayyyy too good to even consider being one of the worst handful of teams in the league.

Obviously, Del Negro is nobody's top choice here, but maybe it was a Belichick type answer - as everybody available will be given 'serious' consideration.
