The Paul Pierce Situation

The Celtics have a situation, rather a dilemma regarding Paul Pierce.

They can buy him out for 5 million dollars. (still counts against the cap)
They can trade him for pieces in return.
Or they can keep him.-Perhaps a trade of other players brings them back a return that helps with one more run.


I have a few questions however,


What about an extension?

How does extending a players contract effect things?   

What happens if the Celtics trade Paul Pierce and the receiving team then places him on waivers.
Can the Celtics resign him if he clears waivers?  How many teams would want Paul Pierce at 15 million plus a year?  How many can afford that and make a title run?

What happens if the Celtics sign a free agent-Al Jefferson, Paul Milsap, Josh Smith etc...
And they go way over the cap.  Is there a provision that prevents a team from doing this?  Or do you simply incur penalties.

You can't resign Pierce once he has been waived. The original team that has waived Pierce cannot be re-signed until a year.

We can only sign the players mentioned with the MLE, and even then that wouldn't be enough unless J-Smoove or Al Jefferson decides to have a change of heart and take less than 5 million to play for us. Which is unlikely.

The best option is to keep Pierce for sentimental reasons, and put him as a sixth man. If he refuses to accept that role, then he'll be trade bait.

Just run with the same squad, go for a Center who we can attain through the MLE, trade some of our team option players for 2nd/1st picks, and draft through there. Build a young squad, or grab pieces/assets.

If he is waived and re-signed for the minimum, the Celtics can use the bi-annual exception and the full MLE to add players to the roster.  If Pierce is retained, the Celtics will likely be so far into the luxury tax that the team can only use the smaller taxpayers' MLE and the veteran's minimum exception to sign free agents.

If the league doesn't rule it to be an attempt at salary cap circumvention, I think Pierce might go for it if it would allow Ainge to bring in talent.  The problem is, Pierce has to be waived before the Celtics are allowed to negotiate with free agents.
