Let's say Pierce is waived, KG decides to retire, and there are no good trades to be made, so the rest of the roster remains mostly intact.  The Celtics sign an adequate center to eat up minutes as a cheap starter and draft another center who steps right in to be a guy who can be a good backup or a fringe starter, but is unlikely to improve beyond that, combining for average production from the 5-spot, but not promising anything better than that in the long run.  Rondo recovers fully.  Green plays well enough that almost no fans complain that he is overpaid.  Bradley plays well enough that almost no fans think that Courtney Lee should be starting instead.

The Celtics barely make the 8th seed in the Eastern Conference with 38 to 40 wins.

Do you feel unhappy that the Celtics are not in the lottery when a tank job may have gotten them into the bottom ten, optimistic that the team looks like it has a solid foundation going forward if it can find a way to add another star, pessimistic that this is fool's gold that will lead Ainge to try to reload around Rondo and Green instead of rebuilding, or sad because you think the team could have been a legit contender if it had kept Pierce and Garnett?

  • Boston Celtics= Championships, nothing less.
Id be horrified. Waste of time. Only good thing would be that Green and Rondo have had standout seasons so their trade value increases a bunch.
If the value of Sully,Bradley and Green all went up then id be ok.

I think realistically theres no way we make the playoffs without those 2 and no all star replacement.
Prefer full blown tank mode. At least then we have a CHANCE at a franchise player.

I'd be absolutely thrilled.

Well, if you tank then you put your future on the ping pong balls.  If you win, then you've established tradeable value on your roster and are well on your way to making deals for the players you need, using cap space and picks to keep building your pile of assets.

Since the second option is A) more fun to watch because the team is occasionally winning and B) doesn't rely on random chance to determine the fate of the franchise, I'd easily prefer winning.

I suspect one realistic way the Celtics make the playoffs without Pierce and Garnett is if Green and Rondo have more value as players than you give them credit for or if they improve beyond what you consider possible/likely for them.

Yup. Hate to imagine the celtics missing all of the postseason, actually.

Without equal replacement of those 2 I wouldn't worry about making the playoffs. In fact Celtic management has the capability of missing playoffs for a decade. I have no faith. They will never pull off the Miracle again of getting a KG and Allen in one season. At that they completely wasted it on one prize.

I'd be happy, sad not seeing KG and PP.    This team would not be lead by Rivers though , since he'd jump ship when the going gets tuff , would be pretty impressive with anew coach.

it would be a squeak....by the narrowest of margins

it all starts with having the right coach

I don't see it happening.  We will be in tank mode most likely.  Doc will be gone and someone ala ML Carr will be playing weird rotations to lose games.

I would probably feel that we could have gone further with them...

Well this scenario is simply not possible. If KG and PP are gone we'll get J Smith and/or T Evans and it will be nice to watch this team grow. A big 3 transition wirh promising future.
It's not possible DA will get nothing at all, or else is fired.

  • A true Celtic plays with heart.
If the Celtics make it into the playoffs, I'll be proud.

Why tank? I'm tired of all this tank and rebuilding crap. Its seriously getting on my nerves. Trade Rondo, trade Sully, trade Bradley, etc.

When has tanking ever worked out for us honestly? It only worked at times we completely sucked, but even then in 2007, Danny Ainge managed to pull off the greatest block buster trade which led to the NBA committing to trying to pull off more Big 3's.

If Sullinger can average a double double, Bradley can manage 7-12 points with solid defense. Green can average 16-20 points per game with at least 4 RPG, and Rondo lead the league in assists again with 8-12 points scored, (which he can definitely do,) and our new Center with our bench managing 10-20 points.

I don't see why not. Its hard to see the green not in the playoffs. If we can make the 7th/8th seed, then at least Danny will see we have sufficient pieces, and just need two key role players, and a Center that is young but has potential to grow and develop.

I'd like for us to have someone like Pekovic who is a bruiser in the paint, but can still grab boards, and be a serious threat in the paint.

But I don't mind us finding a defensive big who can only rebound, block, and defend. If he doesn't even score more than 6 points I couldn't care less.

Our problem is finding a big that can stay healthy, and grow and develop with the team.

The thing about the Celtics is once we grow and develop the team chemistry, there is just so much functionality and awareness when scoring, defending, and overall performance upgraded.

Surprised, and a little bit disappointed, honestly.

That team would not be good enough to win a playoff series.  Though it's a nice young group, they're also lacking high-ceiling talent.  So I'm not sure how much the Celtics really gain from having a season like that other than getting to watch the team play 4-6 playoff games again.

Without PP and KG this team would be fighting for bottom part of Esat Finals togeter with Pistons, Raptors, Wizards etc. The only thing where disagree is the high salary that DA is offering them.
