If we break up the team, I think he bolts.

The waiting game on Doc is getting ridiculous.

I understand that he is not fond of the rebuilding task possibly ahead of him. But he did commit to the team when he signed that extension and claimed he was fully aware of the rebuild ahead : it's time to assume his choice.

I think it's more like Danny just can't get over--or can't quit--Doc.  No matter how many times Doc tells him he needs a break, no matter how he rolls his eyes to Steven A. about how difficult Danny is, no matter how crazy his demands--Danny waits there like the abused lover, just hoping that this time it isn't over for good.

  • Boston Celtics= Championships, nothing less.
Perhaps if we go rebuild mode it would be nice to give him a year or two off. He's been here 10 years now. If he needs a break that's fine. He might want a year to work with Austin.
"We are lucky we have a very patient GM that isn't willing to settle for being good and coming close. He wants to win a championship and we have the potential to get there still with our roster and assets."

quoting 'Greg B' on RealGM after 2017 trade deadline.
Read that last line again. One more time.

There are other good coaches “in the sea”, even if unproven yet. If Doc isn’t up for a rebuild, he may not be the one for the job.

There's something to be said about having a guy in a job who really wants it.

Hard to say that about Doc at this point.

Gonna have to wait a couple weeks.  It all comes down to what they do with Pierce.

It shouldn't have to depend on Pierce and KG though. Doc signed a 5 year deal and talked about being a celtic through thick and thin. If he is now trying to play hardball with Ainge to get Pierce and KG back for one more year, Ainge should show him the door.

I doubt it's like that, really.

I agree that it shouldn't be about whether or not Pierce is retained for Doc.

But we don't know all the details.  Despite what he's said at times, it could be that Doc signed his recent extension having talked to the team ahead of time about the fact that due to his family situation he was going to have to reevaluate each year.  He may not feel like he has it in him to do his best next year all things considered.  That may be especially the case if they let go of Pierce and that results in KG going elsewhere (or retiring) too.  Doc may feel that somebody else is better suited to deal with the resulting situation.

It doesn't have to be a matter of selfishness or going back on promises.

maybe your right, it just rubs me the wrong way that he signed a 5 year deal and talked about how much of a celtic he is when it was clear that we were soon heading to rebuilding, and now a year later he's considering leaving

He does this every year....

Doc Rivers still hasn't decided whether he'll return as the Celtics' head coach next season, but he promised to make an announcement "soon."

When asked about his future by the Boston Globe, Rivers replied, "I'd rather not say." He's likely waiting to see how the Celtics handle Paul Pierce's team option, and whether or not Kevin Garnett returns, before committing to another year in Boston. Rivers is owed a whopping $21 million over the next three seasons, but numerous teams would be happy to hire Doc as their coach or as an executive.

Boston Globe
Correct me if I'm wrong, but "I'd rather not say" doesn't mean he's undecided, it means he won't talk about it.

Move along, I guess?

Doc is his own man.  He has the right to decide to walk away if he doesn't like the direction the team is heading in (if that would be his reason).

Doc is not an indentured servant to the Celtics.

Two things:

1. To those who are clamoring for Doc to uphold his end of the "bargain":

I really don't want Doc to coach a rebuilding team, if that is the direction that we are going.

2. Perhaps Doc is keeping his mouth shut out of loyalty to the organization:

If Doc announces he is leaving, everybody (read other GMs specifically)would believe that the Cs have made the decision that Pierce won't be back. If they believe that decision has been made, that weakens Danny's bargaining position of getting value for Pierce, since the other GMs know that this is a done deal, as opposed to Danny being able to say in negotiations that HE still isn't sure of the direction of the organization and therefore needs to be somewhat impressed by an offer to trade Pierce ('s contract).

I always thought that Doc was an overrated coach anyway so I could careless if he comes back or not. Some people seem to forget that he almost got fired the year we lost 19 games in row. What saved his job is Danny ainge getting Kg and Allen. I will say it again Doc rivers is an overrated coach. I do give him credit for being a good players coach and drawing up late plays out of timeouts.

Pierce not coming back simply means it's down to a trade or a buyout, and Doc's not going to keep this up for another three weeks, which is what it'd take to be a factor in a Pierce deal.

  • You ain't the boss of the freakin' bedclothes.
after what he said last year when he signed his long term extension, he would be a hypocrit to bail out if KG and Pierce don't return

Exactly. Didn't he say something like he wanted to be part of the whole rebuilding process after the big 3 era? He knew what he was getting into when he signed the 5 year deal.

I think he got a Godfather offer to be a president of basketball operations or something. Who just fired their, and lives in a place with elite-level golf courses and nice weather?
