Ok, to begin, this is my first forum post. I've been scrolling these posts to see if anyone had a decent offseason plan for the C's but it seems like they are missing.
Let's begin.
The Celtics are stuck at $73,064,519 for the 2013/14 payroll. That's not good. Most likely, a max free agent signing is unlikely, and a free agent that deserves the max isn't going to  be coming to Boston to accept a lesser contract. That means, trades or praying for miracles are the most possible solutions.
Everyone has been discussing the captain Paul Pierce, being traded away from his home. The idea in some ways makes sense, but I think it would be better to hold onto the future HOF, and make another run. A last run. Still, let's discuss the deals.

Boston - Sacramento

Boston receives:
D. Cousins
Travis Outlaw
Jason Thompson
John Salmons

Sacramento receives:
Paul Pierce
Courtney Lee
Fab Melo

Reasoning: Boston does this to get an Al-star caliber center in return. He will grow along side KG and could be turned from Head case, to a work of art with the leadership from Doc. Other than him, the Celtics take the other players to make the salaries match up, and take away some of the Kings crap contracts. Sacramento does this to shed some other their regrettable contracts (Travis Outlaw, Salmons) and to berid themselves of the coach-killing Cousins. They also fill the few holes they need by getting a perfect small forward with experience, and a decent offensive/perfect defensive shooting guard. It won't be hard for them to ship out Evans to another team, so Lee and Pierce could potentially be starters there in time. They also take Melo for the big man idea. Hopeful like the Celtics were with the "big man project."

Likely-hood: unlikely. Would I want this? To some extent, but I'd prefer to keep Pierce.

Boston - Phoenix

Boston Receives:
Marcin Gortat
Michael Beasley

Phoenix Receives:
Brandon Bass
Courtney Lee
Fab Melo

Reasoning: Boston finds this to be the perfect trade. Phoenix is looking to move on from the Gortat experiment. They want to get younger in every way possible. They will also try and make a run at Bynum (from what I hear and think) Plus with Ryan Mcdough (or however you spell his name) as the new GM, we could potentially swing a deal in our favor similar to the Garnett rip off we committed on Minnesota. Boston does this simply for every reason possible. You shed Bass' contract (which he didn't live up to), you get rid of one of the Guards creating a log jam at that position. Most of all, you get a proven center. He rebounds, he can score, and he pushes Garnett back to the PF, and makes us that much stronger.

Likely-hood: I would pray this deal happens. A deal with the Suns was close to occurring last season, but never happened. This is just a good deal overall.

Free Agents:
The position we should focus on addressing through free agency is the back up point. We need a solid back up. Plain and simple. Here is a list of the points guards looking for a home next season, that I believe we should sign:
Eric Maynor
Devin Harris
Darren Collison
D.J. Augustin
Chauncey Billups
Beno Udirh

We should be focusing on Maynor. He is a talented kid, and knows how to pass the ball. He played extremely well for OKC before his ACL tear, and I feel would be the perfect back-up in Docs system. Then Udrih, Harris, Collison. The others I listed purely because of their talent, and availability.

I am leaving out the free agents for other positions because I think they should be focusing on the point guard in free agency and centers through trade and the draft.

Speaking of the draft, I think that the pick should be used to draft either Jeff Withey, or Gorgei Dieng. That's all I am going to say about the draft.

So to sum it all up, If the deals that I hope happen, and the free agents I'd like come to bean town, the team would look something like this:

PG: Rondo/Maynor/Twill
SG: Bradley/Jet
SF: Pierce/Green/Beasley
PF: Garnett/Sully/Randolph
C: Gortat/Collins/Randolph

Not a bad line up. Give me your thoughts. I left a lot of stuff out, but I will post more if you found this interesting. Thanks for the read guys

Welcome to the forums! It was a great read.

I think the first one's never gonna happen. Shouldn't the Kings want picks?

I hope the second one happens.

And (3) I want Barbosa!

I completely agree with two things you pointed out. 1, both trades might require surrendering the 16th pick, or at least swapping picks. 2, I'd love to have Barbosa back, but the trick would be flipping Terry to another team to ensure that we can make for him. We should pick him up if we already are going to have Terry, Rondo, Maynor (pray), Twill, and Crawford. Let's pray that we get rid of him.

  • Boston Celtics= Championships, nothing less.
Welcome to the boards.

So here's what I think...
the first trade is completely unrealistic.
Zero chance that the Kings give up their best young asset for an aging, deteriorating player just to shed a few crappy contracts. You'd need to send at least Avery, Sully and a few draft picks to dream of them picking up the phone. They'd probably want Green, Sully, and a pick as well as us taking back their overpaid junk.
Pierce wouldn't report to their camp if he was traded there. So they'd be looking at shedding only 10 million of their payroll after waiving him. Not worth it to give up Cousins.

trade 2:
Much more realistic.
Bass is a glue guy in the locker room and his contract is okay/not too brutal on the cap.
We could use Gortat but unfortunately he's not really taking us anywhere even with Garnett.

I guess if you could have Bass locked up for 3 more years at 6 million per year or Gortat at 8-9 you'd take Gortat because of his size and age.
Rondo would make him a much more valuable player with easy looks around the rim (like Nash did in Phoenix).

I'm still an advocate of not committing to anything unless it's going to make us a contender this season.
If we aren't gonna be a serious contender, then why bother?
I do agree that there aren't any max contract free agents out there worth the money so I'd rather move Pierce and his enormous deal to get a max player kind of guy in a sign and trade to a profit or cap conscious team

eg: Pierce+ Avery Bradley to Memphis for Zac Randolph.

Gives us an all star caliber big man to pair with Garnett.
Rebounding, scoring and playoff experience at a position of need. With Green here, there's no point in keeping Pierce around if we can get someone as good or better at another position. As long as the incoming players deal isn't too long that's the best way to contend with KG still here.
Compare the Gortat sitution to a Zac Randolph situation.
Which one goes deeper in the playoffs?

Rondo
Bradley
Pierce
KG
Gortat

or

Rondo
Bradley
Green
Zac Randolph
KG

I'd also try and move Avery while he's got value. Clear cap room and sign JJ Redick as a free agent if we can get him on a value deal around 6-8 million per year.
We need scoring- someone with 20ppg potential who's already close to that...and someone who can stretch the floor for Green and Rondo, like Danny Green does for the Spurs.
My perfect offseason to give KG a real shot..
Acquire Zac Randolph
Acquire JJ Redick

Rondo
Redick
Green
Zeebo
KG

with Sully, Terry, Terrence Williams as backup PG and some serious back up big men.
"We are lucky we have a very patient GM that isn't willing to settle for being good and coming close. He wants to win a championship and we have the potential to get there still with our roster and assets."

Read that last line again. One more time.

I actually looked into a trade for Zebo. I love his work ethic and his game all around. Great idea. There are just two problems for me. Well, actually 3. First, Zebo's value dropped due to his playoff disappearance. Second, his contract. $16 Million per year, and I believe 2 years left. That's A LOT of money, and considering the free agent class next year, I think it would be wise to save that money for the splash we could make then. Third, giving up Pierce. I love him, and I still would like to build around the ever aging KG Pierce core for one more year.

I'd like to go after Amir Johnson for a center back-up, and also Maynor. Those are the other two guys that would make the bench mob and actual Mob.
