I think players should be fined a percentage of their annual salary, not a set amount that is equal for all players. 75,000 is nothing to Lebron for example, but it would bankrupt a guy like Shavlik Randolph. It's hard to say if 75,000 is a fair punishment because it really does depend on how much the person being fined makes. Hibbert just signed a huge contract last summer.

Go tell the players' union that.

75K is a lot of money period.

Think about all the things he could do with that money, and what investing it could yield for a young man of his age in the future.

I think it is excessive considering that we cherish freedom of expression in this country.

You want to talk about vulgar and obscene? Well check out our NBA owners get municipalities to build arenas for them, and the ticket prices they charge for games, parking and concessions - now that is vulgar.

He expected it and got it. They shouldn't have fined him that much. 75 large is too much but his contract can afford it. I love Hibbert's attitude tho. I hope he brings it to game 7. Hopefully this Hibbert thread stays on course and not into Rex Ryan's foot fetish and else where.

Seems perfectly reasonable to me.  I mean this wasn't heat of the moment overheard in the background stuff.  He was being interviewed and used profanity and then a gay slur in two separate answers.  Frankly, I would have been fine with a bigger fine and am glad the NBA didn't wuss out where homophobia is concerned.

True.  Frankly I would have been fine if they suspended him from the first few games next year, but they can't do that and let him play in the playoffs (and I wouldn't have suspend him from the playoffs with that much at stake).  It is time for sports leagues to end hate, bigotry, etc.  It has no place in them and can't be tolerated.  This hopefully helps send that message.

It's in line with the $100k Kobe got fined for using a gay slur.  That was directed at a ref, but it was also meant to be private.  Hibbert's was a joke, but it was said very publicly.

With the NBA's PR at stake, $75k makes sense.

Maybe makes him room mates with Jason Collins?   It's way too much of a fine.  Typical over reaction by the NBA.   Kermit Washington almost killed Rudy and he didn't get this kind of fine.   You want to tell me a slur is worse than assault?  I don't think so ever.  I am not condoning what he said, but guys hit guys get less fines than this comment.  Is that fair?

Am I the only one thinking it is going to now be hell for Hibbert and these Pacers down in Miami? He was getting his respect among league refs now it wouldn't surprise me to see everything go against him tomorrow.
