Problem: Marion has said he won't report to a rebuilding situation.

Possible solution: Cuban sends part of the buyout for Marion in cash back in the trade as well, and we make a lot of noise about keeping Marion then waive him.
If Marion doesn't report... no problem.  Just helps us tank.

Dallas really wants cap space, right?

Could we trade them Paul Pierce (15 mil) for:

Shawn Marion - 9 mil
Vince Carter - 3 mil
Jared Cunningham (22 year old SG picked #24 last year) - 1.2 mil
#13 pick

...

Dallas could then release Pierce and would then only have the following under contract:

Dirk - 22.7 mil
Money leftover for Pierce - 5 mil

Total about 28 mil.  OJ Mayo is opting out of his contract.  Dallas would have 30 million to offer free agents.  They could target both Chris Paul and Dwight Howard as a package deal.  They'd have Chris Paul, Dwight and Dirk for a year... then the next year Dirk falls off the books and they can go after LeBron.

From Boston's perspective, we are rebuilding anyways.  Marion and Carter expire at the end of the year... we could float them at the deadline.  The #13 pick and Cunningham are just a couple minor assets we get for dumping Pierce.  We can use them towards our rebuild.  Could also try to package #13 + #16 and move up a bit in the draft.
interesting deal.  would be tough to turn down but I wonder what we'd do with all those bodies on the roster.  sure the China 3 can go and PP is gone but you're adding Marion, Carter, Cunningham and 2 1st rounders.  we're 1 over the roster limit I believe.  need to move some more bodies to get the roster down.  JET, Lee, AB, Crawford and Bass are all fine candidates to go IMO but not seeing any takers.
Just an idea.  As someone else mentioned, Marion would refuse to report to a rebuilding situation.  Maybe they'd just buy him out, but it would make more sense to just hang onto him until the deadline and move him to a contender that can use him.  Cunningham and the #13 would just be some assets for dumping Pierce (as opposed to buying him out and getting nothing in return)... but maybe you can package the #13 from Dallas, our #16, Cunningham, Melo, ... and get a super-asset or move up in the draft.  Who knows?

Yeah, Im on that level as well, but who knows if Wyc is a big fan of the notion.

If Pierce being traded doesn't make KG retire, it doesn't look like a rebuilding situation.  Find a way to add a decent center to the mix and it doesn't look horrible on paper.  Marion would theoretically help the team's rebounding problems.

Yeah, I have no problem not paying him while he sits at home and never plays basketball again nor gets credit towards the NBA pension.

I'd be ecstatic to get a lottery pick, even in a "weak" draft (see: 2009), in return for Pierce or Garnett.

Me too, but the only teams that have a lottery pick who could use their veteran talents is OKC or Dallas. This is exactly the type of deal I would like to happen which is why it probably won't happen.
DKC:  Rockets
CB Draft: Memphis Grizz
Players: Klay Thompson, Jabari Parker, Aaron Gordon
Next 3 picks: 4.14, 4.15, 4.19

I don't really think Dallas is a good trading partner for us.

If we ended up with Dallas' draft pick and then either Marion and/or OJ Mayo and they actually play next season, then great.

But to just trade Pierce for someone who might not even report to our training camp?
What's the point?

A lottery pick. You'd trade Pierce for a bag of 9 million dollar dirty socks and a lottery pick, if it was on the table and the dirty socks were expiring.

Not sure I like the idea

but I could see something like #16 + Avery going to Minn for #7 and #26.

I could see DA doing this for Len at #7 then at #26 taking Giannis, Ledo, or Larkin in that order if available.

I think Minn jumps on that trade. Avery is a great pairing with Rubio and they can still get a solid big ( Withey or Dieng at 16)
