The Boston Celtics could consider promoting assistant coach Tyronn Lue rather than allowing him to be poached by another team, Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports reported Wednesday morning.

According to Wojnarowski, Lue and Rio Grande Valley (D-League) head coach Nick Nurse are candidates for an assistant coaching position with the Toronto Raptors. Lue has spent the last two seasons as a Celtics assistant after two prior campaigns as director of basketball development.

Because the Celtics are "big believers in Lue," Wojnarowski reported, it's "hard to imagine they'll let him leave without offering a promotion to bench assistant."

Lue's relationship with head coach Doc Rivers goes back many years, dating at least to 2003, when Rivers coached Lue on the Orlando Magic. Though Rivers was fired only 11 games into the season, he must have admired Lue's approach to basketball – Lue once told the Boston Globe that during his time with the Magic, Rivers offered him a job as soon as his playing days were over.

"I called Doc up when I was done and said I wanted to get into coaching," Lue said, "and the next day he had a job for me."

During his four years with the Celtics, Lue has gradually handled more responsibilities, saying Rivers gave him time to "get the player out" before giving him more duties as a coach – duties that have included writing scouting reports and coaching the summer league team last year.

  • A true Celtic plays with heart.
Why is every other team interested in grabbing our coaches and staff? Lol just something I noticed.

Because we have over qualified candidates filling in smaller positions.

I like Lue on our bench. Hope he gets a promotion in green.

  • You ain't the boss of the freakin' bedclothes.
Hope they keep him, it'd be nice to have an easy transition when Doc leaves, presumably at the end of the current contract.

Is there a reason why you think Doc would leave after his contract?

I think the longer he stays the more likely he will stay in boston for a long long time.

Plus he's coached just about every kind of team in boston and has stayed. Worst team in the league, youngest team, oldest team, best team, mediocre team. Seems kike he can handle it all

I'm sure Doc COULD coach for a very long time but it seems very apparent he would at least like a hiatus to spend time with the family for a few years
