nothing to see here, just a tax break.

What? The tax break is far less than the amount of the contribution. He's still paying a ton of money out of pocket, probably $600,000 or so.

Maybe that's "nothing to see" from your point of view, but from mine it seems like an awfully generous contribution.

Even for a guy like him, this is real money, and he did not even publicize it himself.

This is what got me. Such class act that needs no public approval whatsoever. He just did it because of his good heart.

I have gained much respect for Kevin Durant. And if I have the chance I would personally thank him for this good deed.

This reminded me, KG was similarly pretty low-key about his Katrina donation, back then. I think any publicity mostly came from Oprah's end:

I think Durant's a great guy.  I think it's great he donated a $1m.  But, I think we give people too much credit fir "not publicizing it himself."

To be a cynic, along with lightspeed5, the donation probably endears him even more to the people of OKC (if that's even possible).  A few more Durant shoes and jersey's might just go off the shelves because of this.

Not that I think Durant did it for that reason, or for a tax break, but if he really wanted to remain anonymous, to get no publicity for it, he easily could have.  I just think sometimes we give people a little too much praise for "they didn't even publicize it", though ironically, a lot of those stories end up all over the media.

I'm not going to tell everybody I did it, but I'm not going to hide the fact either, that's par for the course with a lot of people (both regular Joes and celebrities).  No need for extra Durant praise for that.  I think a lot of superstars/celebrities give a lot of money to causes that we don't often hear about.

Don't get me wrong, great guy, who went above and beyond with the donation, but I think sometimes we go overboard on the praise.  Not that you can't applaud him for giving, but he gave the same way most people (including celebrities) do.

Personally, I don't care why he gave it.  The fact is, he did, and I applaud him for that.  He's donating his time, and he's donating his money.

He gave as much as Clay Bennett did, despite Bennett being worth $400 million.  He gave as much as the NBA did.  Regardless of whether he receives some positive PR, $1 million from Durant is generous.

Fair enough, maybe this just means his PR people are smarter than average.

But, there are reasons for publicizing it a little bit that are actually totally altruistic. For one, the Thunder have announced they are matching. And, since KD was urging others to donate, this may actually lead to significantly greater donations by others, particularly those with money like his.

So, he could be using his celebrity for the greater good here.

Oh I agree.  A lot of good things for the area as a whole can definitely come from Durant's donation being known.  I applaud Durant for his donation, and it just re-enforces that I think he's a great guy.  It's just the "he didn't want publicity" thing I sorta role my eyes at some times.

I've started to dislike his game on the court.  But by all accounts he's a great person off it.

Nothing but respect for that move.

If you're gonna donate $1mil, you might as well get some credit for it, right? It's only human nature. And it's not like he's not donating.

nothing to see here, just a tax break.

Such cynicism.
Cynicism is donating money for every homerun, three pointer, goal, when someone flings a carrot at the Green Monster or whatnot. All those campaigns are a joke.

I tip my hat to people who shell out to help when there's real need, and do it without any need to beat his own drum. KD has got his head screwed right, and if he gets any tax break on this, he's deserved every cent of it.

If I had the power to make social rules as they apply to responses to good deeds, I would deem that if we don't truly know a person's heart or mind that we would presume positive intent before presuming otherwise.

Kudos to KD, Kemp and anyone else who contributes to the effort.

Love this guy. In the same year Lebron came out with "The Decision" Durant signed a long-term contract extension and announced it on Twitter by saying "God is Great". I admire his humbleness.
