I might have posted this idea elsewhere before, I forget, but I think if Howard does want to go to Houston, there is a scenario where the C's could get in on that deal in a way that could help them gain some interesting assets going forward.

Something along the lines of:

Houston gets: Howard

Boston gets: Asik, Robinson, Artest

LA gets: KG, Pierce

Why Houston does it is simple.

Why the Lakers do it, is to basically make one run this year with an incredibly old, but actually intriguingly well fit core of Nash/Kobe/Pierce/KG/Gasol, before blowing it up to lure Lebron next summer.

Why the C's do it, is to get a very talented and productive young center, who is signed for a reasonable contract in Asik, and a talented young PF who is coming off a disappointing rookie year, but still has a ton of talent, and was a slow starter in college as well, and could just need time to transition to the NBA game.  And, they would just immediately buy out Artest.

Its not the most thrilling trade in the world, but it would at least provide the framework that could at least be interesting.

it's an excellent proposal, helps all 3 teams, and makes sense, BUT, I just cant get over the idea of giving our two best players to the lakers.

I think Houston would need to give up more than just Asik+Robinson to land Dwight. Likely at least a 1st rounder

Remember that if LA doesn't want to play ball, Howard doesn't need them to. He'll take the lesser contract rather than the S&T.

That's true. I heard something on Mike and Mike this morning where Dwight could sign a 3 year deal with Houston then re-up for the max and not really lose any money in the long run. Also, Texas has no income tax I believe which is a plus financially.

All true. Remember also that Dwight seems to kind of like being in the middle of 'the dwight show'.

A 3 year deal where he re-ups right as he's turning 30 might not be a negative to him, as long as he's not overly concerned about his health or the fundamental uncertainty.

A sign and trade can only give Howard 4 years and 4.5% raises, just like signing as a FA via Houston's cap room.

I don't see why a 3 year deal would be on the table. A four year deal with an ETO after the third year, is that what is being speculated here?

I think Dwight Howard makes the Rockets a contender.

A healthy Dwight Howard makes any team a contender. Except the Bobcats. No one can help the Bobcats.

Dwight would look good in Houston. If he screws the Lakers, I'll be the first to send him a card.

I believe the Trailblazers could absorb Asik's contract without having to send out anything.

Asik for a 1st? That might be a lot when Houston doesnt have much leverage, but Asik's a picture perfect fit in Portland.

Every team with trade exception and/or cap space would take him.

I understand that - but Portland has a unique combination of him being a good fit, and an asset they could give back to get the deal done.

Also there's an unusual amount of teams with cap space who already have a 4 and 5 in place.

? Portland has $58.3 million committed this year. They are right at the cap, I believe.

Edit: I see, you mean next year.

Yeah, I actually suppose Houston would have some assets the Lakers would want as well, should a sign and trade take place.

Maybe the Lakers get Asik, Lin, Delfino and Parsons for Howard going to Houston.

Why would the do that? They should be able to get enough room to sign Howard outright without giving up that many good players.

TP for beating me to it.

Howard has to want to go to Houston for this to happen, in which case Houst just needs to shed what 5 million? They can just give away one asset instead of dealing with the Lakers.
