Seeing as I'm bored, I might as well pile on:
Doc has been a head coach for 14 seasons now - but only 13 full (Magic let him go just 11 games in in 2003-04).
In those 13 full seasons, Doc has taken his team to the playoffs 10 times.
That's with three VERY different rosters, mind you.
Those Orlando rosters were crazy - as were the early Boston rosters when he came here.
He won the Atlantic with Boston in 2005 _before_ we got KG.
He's gotten to the ECF or higher 3 times and the NBA Finals twice, winning once.
That's a resume' only a small handful of coaches can match.
Sure, he never got to the higher levels in the playoffs until he got his additional 'studs' in KG & Ray.
But NO COACH ever has gotten far in the playoffs without stars. That's just the reality that no matter how good of a coach you are, you don't win in the playoffs without elite talent.
Finally, the myth that Doc doesn't play/develop young players is just wrong. Wrong. Wrong.
This kind of statement is put forth by folks who just weren't paying attention (or won't bother to check their facts). The fact is, that Doc relied _heavily_ on and developed a ton of young players in Orlando (Maggette, McGrady, Mike Miller) and again in Boston (Al Jefferson, Perkins, Delonte', Tony Allen, Marcus Banks, Rajon Rondo, Leon Powe, Glen Davis, Avery Bradley, Jared Sullinger) all on teams that reached the playoffs!
Yes, there are also a lot of young players who got almost no minutes under Doc. No young player that Doc ignored has yet to turn up as being 'special' on some other team.
Another fact is that, over recent years, MOST of our draft picks have been in the mid 20s or lower. And the fact is, in the NBA, the vast majority of picks that low don't pan out. Over half never play a minute in the NBA. The vast majority that DO get minutes are just deep bench players.
These complaints seem to come from guys who fell in love with some bench rook who had to suffer the 'injustice' of not getting used by Doc Rivers. Never mind that the kid just might not be good enough.
