I am not an NBA scout, but here is my opinion of Shabazz Muhammed.
1. He has great NBA size, length and strength for an NBA wing. He has poor quickness. Laterally and on one-on-one situations. Almost impossible for him to stay in front of wings in the NBA.
2. He has very poor vision of the floor. He can literally draw 5 defenders and not even look at any one of his 4 WIDE OPEN teammates before chucking up a terrible shot.
3. He has a great motor when it comes to scoring and rebounding on the offensive end. He is almost invisible defensively. He uses his strength and length to rebound, not boxing out.
4. He has a very ugly and only moderately effective shooting stroke. Has a variety of floaters that are as poor as they are ugly. This is the reason that despite his athleticism he finishes very poorly at the rim and has a low p.p.p. in transition.
5. Great at getting to the line using his strength and aggression.
6. Big shot maker. Has the clutch gene when it comes to scoring, but not necessarily making plays on the defensive end.
7. He has issues with diet and weight control. He has a body type that is naturally heavier (a lesser version of Barkley, Baby and Sully). He has to work harder than most people his size to maintain his weight. This is also what gives him his bullish strength however. He came into college out of shape, and during the season he struggled with his poor diet and had to see a nutritionist.
8. This is speculation on my part and I don't have any concrete evidence for this. However, it seems to me that he is not a leader and a very selfish teammate. This is just an impression I got from listening to interviews of his teammates and coaches on youtube.
The best comparison I can come up with is Lance Stephenson with conditioning issues. Indiana has got him to buy into defense and turned him into a useful player in his 3rd year.
If Shabazz falls to the 16th pick, I would NOT draft him. He would probably be good value somewhere in the mid 20's however.
