1. Courtney Lee ball denial: if he's not doing it, he's coming out. When I say ball denial I mean from one end of the court to the other. Get "way" under JR's skin.

2. Terrence Williams: Use four fouls, push the limits of physical play with JR, see how far you can go with the refs. Might not be far, but you try it.

Just getting "after" JR.

Hopefully you instigate and get him out of his game. If you harass him into a poor shooting night, you've got a shot.

Then more pressure mounts on Melo - throw Bass, Green and Pierce at him...

Definitely would like to see some pressure, but for some reason it seems like EVERY shot JR takes is a bad shot, BUT it goes in. I think he practices taking bad shots.

Sometimes I literally just shake my head at the shots JR Smith takes..

If he didn't make half of the ridiculous, and amazing shots I've seen go in. He wouldn't been considered a savior for the Knicks by any means..

It's based on your perspective, quite simply

Son, I ain't better than you, I just think different

This is pretty much the blueprint the Bulls use when they play them, push the Knicks around and frustrate them before you know it they are committing offensive fouls left and right and losing focus

And then you have Jason Kidd, Raymond Felton, Pablo Prigioni, Iman Shumpert, Steve Novak, and inside-presence of Tyson Chandler to deal with.

Yeah j804, that's exactly the way I see it. I don't think JR or Melo respond well to an in your face, physical defensive style. Melo is probably a little better than JR with this but I would definitely "get after" them.

I'd mix Courtney Lee and TWill on JR and Jason Terry, Bradley or Crawford at the other spot, whoever has ig going in one way or another.

But I'd zero in on JR - make Melo have to put up 40+ to beat us...

I will try to make defence rotation for both Carmelo and JR Smith
1.for Carmelo rotation of Bass/ Randolpf/Green
2. for JR Smith rotation of Lee/Williams/AB

We simply have to ANTAGONIZE JR into blowing up again.  We have to channel the old Bill Lambier and play psychological warfare.  This has to be done to have a chance tonight.

KG is a master at this and Jet is pretty good at this are well.  We need someone else off our bench to goad him into breaking down.

The refs will be watching him thru a microscope.

It is ridiculous that he ONLY got a 1 game suspension!!  He got ejected with only about 7 minutes to play, but I guess they counted that as 1 game.  It clearly should have been at least two games.  Oh well.  Stern must protect the thug HE chose to give the 6th Man of the Year Award to, right??

Suarez got 10 games for an elbow? I thought it was racial slurs, or his recent "incident".

  • I'm a Paul Heyman guy.
Face front JR. Either Lee or T-Will.

Let's not put Avery here, he's completely overmatched.

Anything JR makes has to be forced fadeaways.

It's going to sound nuts, but here's what I do:

Start T'Will at PG against Felton:
Physical enough on D to body Felton, and can make entry passes and handle ball.  Upgrade from Bradley in this match up.

Use JET to backup PG against Kidd:
No speed mismatch on D, keep Kidd honest (out of passing lanes) on the other end.

Start Pierce on Prigliioni at SG:
Most firepower.  Use it.

Bradley/Lee backup SG and take turns at JRSmith.  They're our best SG defenders; they should be able to keep him honest enough, even though he's 6POY.

Green starts SF:
Again, most firewpower.  Pierce backs up.

Bass on Melo:
Bass works his tail off, but can only be expected to go 24 mins or so.

Green & KG split remaining 24 mins backup PF, including  a stint of KG on Melo.

KG starts at C for 24 mins.

Backup C duties:  Need a help rim defender and rebounder.
Candidates:  Wilcox, SRandolph, DJWhite.
Winner, Doc:  Bass
Winner, me:   Wilcox or Shav

That's the matchup strategy:  lots of guys playing high energy perimeter defense, with our best playing there best with plenty of rest, and a solid interior rebounding presence.  That's how we win.

But Doc won't start T-Williams and will stay with Bradley, who Felton has pushed around and struggles to initiate an offense, and Bass will continue to play center, so we'll have no interior defense, rebounding, or rim protection when KG is out.

That's how we win (or lose):  matchups at positions in possession games.
