The Is Rajon Rondo a HoFer thread got me thinking... how many players in history, were they to retire at 27, would have had a substantial enough resume to be inducted into the Hall of Fame?

My list, off the top of my head:

Jordan
Kobe
Magic
Bird
Russell
Kareem
Duncan
Wilt
Walton
Oscar
West

LeBron, Durant (will be by 27), and KG.

Moses would probably be in the discussion.

You're joking right?

Jordan was 27 for the 90-91 season.

Bird was 27 in 83-84

Kobe was 27 in 05-06. Etc.

No way any of those dudes have the resumes to get in at that point. At all.

I feel like LB and KG would've easily made the HoF if they retired at that age. KG already had one heck of a impressive resume.

Magic was 27 for 86-87

Russell was 27 for 61-62

Kareem was 27 for 74-75

Wilt was 27 for 63-64

Walton was 27 for 79-80

Oscar was 27 for 65-66

For KG--Not a Hall of Fame resume. No Championships. No MVPs. No substantial playoff success. A resume of folding in the clutch.

And his numbers aren't really HoF either at that point:

You can maybe make the argument for Bird. 2 Rings. Finals MVP. Regular Season MVP. Solid career numbers:

But this thread is really a tribute to hindsight bias--there's almost no one that's achieved enough by the age of 27 to be a HoF lock.

Isiah would have a good shot. So would Kareem.

Edit: You'd have plenty of guys from early in the 60s or so that put up really big numbers like Oscar and others.

I don't agree.

Jordan (absolutely):
1x Olympic gold medal
1x NCAA championship
1x Naismith/Wooden/Oscar
2x NBA MVPs
1x NBA Champion
1x NBA Finals MVP
1x NBA Defensive Player of the Year
5x NBA Scoring champion (in a row)
7x All-star (in a row)
4x All-Defensive First team (in a row)
5x All-NBA First team (in a row)

Bird (probably):
1x Naismith/Wooden/Oscar
1x Rookie of the Year
2x NBA Champion
1x NBA Finals MVP
1x NBA MVP
5x All-Star (in a row)
1x All-star MVP
5x All-NBA First team (in a row)

Kobe (maybe):
3x NBA Champion
8x All-star
1x NBA All-star MVP
1x NBA Scoring champion
4x All-NBA First team
4x All-Defensive First team

EDIT:  I'd argue that Magic has probably the most significant 27 year old HoF resume in history.

The high school greats would certainly be a greater advantage than most.  I mean Lebron was 27 at the end of last year.  He clearly would have made it into the HOF at that point after just winning the title and finals MVP to go along with his 3 regular season MVP awards (as well as all of the All NBA teams, all star appearances, etc.).

Duncan would have been in easily as well.  He had 2 regular season MVP's and 2 championships (in which he was the finals mvp in both) before he was 28.

Shaq would have been in.  The year he turned 27 he won his first title (as finals mvp) and was the MVP of the league that year.  To go along with all of the obscene stats, he gets in.

Kobe gets in with the 3 titles and all of the All NBA, all star games, 2 scoring titles, etc.   I mean he was still just 27 in 05-06 and had been in the league 9 years.

Garnett probably gets in though is much closer.  The year he was 27 he won the MVP and the Wolves advanced to the WCF.  Along with his stats, that probably gets him in.

Dwight Howard is an interesting case.  I think all of the off court stuff may keep him out (as well as no titles), but he probably would otherwise deserve to be there as he is a 3 time defensive player of the year, led the league in rebounding 6 times (including 5 straight and 2 other 2nd places), led a very weak Orlando team to the finals, and has more than enough 1st team All NBA awards.

Wade is also interesting.  As he only had 6 seasons before he turned 28, but he had the title, won the Finals MVP, had just won the scoring title, and had a number of post-season awards (but no MVP) as well as insane stats overall.

That probably covers the players drafted in the 90's or later.  Durant is just 24 so he will probably do enough to get there, but the same could have also been said about Rose and look what happened to him (he is still just 23 so he might actually be able to get there as well), so you just don't know.

Rotation - D. Daniels, Mitchell, G. Wallace, Melo, Noah
Deep Bench - Korver, Turner

I think you're generally right, but don't forget that the Hall of Fame is a basketball Hall of Fame, not an NBA one.  You could make a very compelling argument that what Walton/Kareem did from 18-22 was more significant than Lebron.  In fact, I think that's absolutely the case.

Bird would be a slam dunk.

NBA MVP.  Any of them not make it to the hall?

Throw in two titles and Finals MVP.

Can we put Shaq in the list?

At 27 is when his dominant years have started.

I think so.  I think his 27th year sealed it (first championship / NBA Finals MVP / regular season MVP / 2nd scoring title)

1x NBA Champion
1x NBA Finals MVP
1x NBA MVP
7x NBA All-Star
2x NBA Scoring Champion
2x All-NBA first team
NBA Rookie of the Year
