Josh Smith scares me....reminds of a guy from the early to mid nineties who would put up great numbers but inevitably would screw up and take stupid shots in crunch time....Xavier Mc Donald

Our salary if we amnesty/trade Pierce and KG retires is 46.2M according to hoopshype. If we waive PP it's 51.2M. We aren't hard capped like we were in 2012/13 but we can only  sign our own FAs over the cap I think.

What we could do is trade some of our assets to cap relief. For instance if Pierce and KG come completely off the books AND we trade Courtney Lee for an expiring or a pick...then we have about a ~$17-19M max-contract to hand out, depending on the cap next year.

The hypothetical is interesting and my answer to "what two 2013 FAs would you give max deals" would be Chris Paul and Dwight Howard. They are the only two guys up this year who deserve max money. If I had to pick 1 I'd choose Howard because Rondo is already on our roster.

Guys I'd consider giving 10-12M+ include:

Josh Smith
Andre Iguogala
David West
Andrew Bynum
Manu Ginobli
Paul Millsap
Al Jefferson

Guys I'd give 3-6M:

Elton Brand
Chris Kaman
Jose Calderon
Jarrett Jack
Earl Clark
TONY ALLEN
Monta Ellis
JJ Hickson

I still don't believe this is necessarily correct.

Garnett's salary for next year is guaranteed at $12.45 million, and another year after that for at least $6 million. There would need to be some sort of buyout, although that could be stretched (over as many as 5 years, I believe).

I know KG is a team guy, but assuming he won't take a single dollar contractually owed to him upon retirement seems like a huge assumption.

I thought if he retires he forfeits any future earnings from the contract

Retirement due to medical condition is the only way to avoid the payroll hit. The player still gets paid, though.

IIRC, Rasheed Wallace was still owed money on the final year of his deal when he filed for retirement, and the amount of the buyout he negotiated with the Celtics counted against the team's cap that season.

I would rather let the flexibility role forwards as the Celtics move other contracts off the books.

Trade the space for guys on the last year of their contracts along with draft picks to help teams get under cap.

Build up trade assets to put to use with the cap space.  Lets be honest, cap space trades with assets is probably going to be the Celtics best way to add a star (disgruntle)next to Rondo in the future.

I am against trying to overpay for the B-stars.

Sorry what does IIRC mean?

Thank you for clearing this up. Although I think it is ludicrous that a player could retire and get their whole salary for a given year.

You may be wrong as well. I too thought KG's salary was still on the books, but apparently if you file official retirement papers with the NBA office, you can forego the rest of your salary, which doesn't count on the salary cap. I may be wrong since it definitely conflicts with what Larry Coon said

Edit: Found it here. if KG signs official papers, his contract comes completely off the books.
"Players can also voluntarily, formally retire by filing paperwork with the league, in which case their contract is cancelled and the player doesn’t get paid. Jason Williams did this with the Clippers in 2008.

Yes. If we've learned anything in recent years it's that patience and preserving cap flexibility are virtues when it comes to rebuilding.

Let's be Houston, not New Jersey.

Or, let's just be the 2004-2007 Celtics. Danny has proven that he can do it once.

Losing both PP and KG in the same time, does not have sense. The problemis i their contract htat give you more salary space.

That's correct.  If KG formally retires, we're only on the hook for any money we've actually paid him up until that point.

Haha!

It is amazing, though, how many times I see the same completely impossible scenarios put forth.
