I know most people around here know this, but I've seen a lot of people recently talking about how maybe we ought to amnesty this player or that player. This clarification has been made by others before, but as it's not in a sticky somewhere, I figure I'll make it again.
1. The amnesty provision can only be exercised on a player who was under their current contract when the previous CBA was in effect. The only players on the Celtics right now who qualify are Pierce, Rondo, and Avery Bradley.
2. The amnesty provision cannot be exercised on players who are traded for. Players who are amnestied must have been under contract with the team that is using the amnesty on them since before the new CBA was ratified. So the Celtics couldn't trade for somebody on a long term contract from the previous CBA and then amnesty them later.
Again, the only candidates for amnesty are Rondo, Pierce, or Bradley. As much as we'd love to amnesty Bass or Terry, it's not possible, unfortunately.
