Sergey Karasev

I haven't seen this kid play but from his stats, the write ups on him, his measurements, and scouting videos he seems like a real possibility for the Cs to pick. Seems like a kyle Korver type shooting SF who has a great feel for the game.

The measurments from Nike hoops summit where released and he came in at 6'7 in shoes 197 with 6'9.25 wingspan. Aside from having to gain 10-15 lbs this puts him at a good SF size in the NBA.

He is coming from a strong russian league where he averages the following. (same league andrei kirilinko averaged 14pts 7rb last season and sonny weems is averaging 14pts 3rb this season)

32min 16pts 44%FG 49%3pt 82%FT 3rb 2ass

In the same league at 23 yrs old Alexey Shved averaged

22min 11pt 48%FG 49%3pt 83%FT 2.5rb 3ass

Shved has gone on to have a solid NBA rookie year averaging just under 9pts in 24 minutes.

What's interesting with those stats comparisons is that Karasev is still only 19.

(I'm presuming Russian ages are accurate.)

More info from DraftExpress:

He did start playing in the Russian league when he was 16, if I'm reading that right.

He is young at 19, but I wonder with these international kids who start playing early whether they are actually closer to their potential at age 19, because they've been playing against grownups already.

Rubio for example hasn't seemed to progress much. Some of that could be because of his injury, I guess.

Karasev does seem intriguing though, and in contrast to that Giannis kid, he's not playing against guys who look like they belong at my local Y.

Either way I think it's time for Danny to gamble on one of these high-risk, high-reward kids.

How does this kid project on the defensive end?  I'm not too interested in drafting a Korver clone, personally.

What I read labeled him as a "good effort, bad tools" defender.

I agree about the general emphasis. I prefer good defense to good offense any day.

Thanks for the response.  I'm not especially fond of this draft, but I do think we can do better than a shooting specialist at our first round pick.  That seems like the kind of guy you try to grab in the second round.

I agree but it also depends on the role the kid will be playing. As a starting SF you really need a decent defender. However as a 6th man bench scorer its safer to have a offense first player. If he can become a more well rounded Kyle Korver I would love to have him coming off the bench.

Amen to that, although I think Danny might say, "That's exactly what I did with Sullinger, Bradley, Melo, and Giddens. And Delonte. And Gerald Green."

I always say, "Swing for the fences", but what I really mean is, "I want Danny to draft Dirk Nowitzki, Serge Ibaka, Ricky Rubio, Goran Dragic, Nikola Pekovic, Omer Asik, or Danillo Gallinari."

If Dario Saric stays in the Draft, I'm really hoping Danny picks him up.

Looking at Saric vs Karasev what makes Saric the better prospect? I know he is taller and a few months younger.
