Wow, so much dislike for Kobe on this board, some even saying they're happy to see him go...

Kobe has been the hardest worker off the court and hardest competitor on the court for the last decade in the NBA.  He has had some incredible moments that has absolutely wowed me as a basketball fan.

As much as he gets criticized for trying to live up to Jordan, we will probably never see anybody come as close to being what Jordan was for a long time.

How do you kniw he's been the hardest worker?

Pretty sure Lebron will end up closer to Jordan than Kobe

Because the media said so

Hard workers dive for loose balls, in my book.   Kobe is a great player ans I am sure he works hard in the off season but I do not see a new trick every off season like some past hard workers.   Jordan developed a fadeaway over time, Bird was a way harder worker.  What has Kobe developed new over an off season except another way to cheap shot someone?

Oh Kobe instinctively and naturally knew all those cheap shots all along. Its in his nature to be a scum bag. He has just broken them out over the years so as not to appear to be such a dirty player. No one calls Kobe "dirty". They call him "smart". Had he broken all those cheap shots out all at once years ago he would have forever been known as "dirty" like Bruce Bowen.

Come on man.  Kobe's game has changed dramatically as he's gotten older.  It's more ground based, with more mid-post set ups. Kobe has a rep for being the hardest worker in the game because he puts in the time and the results he gets are spectacular for a guy that age with that many minutes.

Not many guards with 16 years and 50,000 minute in have been able to convert almost 70% of their layups/dunks.   Kobe takes about a third of his FGAs right at the rim. You don't do that at his age and mileage unless you're in supreme condition physically.

I'm not a fan of Kobe Bryant, but there's no denying his work ethic and conditioning. As far as not diving for loose balls and taking charges, Kobe has made a conscious decision to not do so for the greater good of his health.  That's not something I endorse, but it has worked for him, since he's missed only 9% of games in his career, one of the lowest rates for a superstar.  Kobe's idol, Michael Jordan, missed only eight games in 12 seasons with the Bulls, subtracting his second season when he had the knee operation, and the games he missed in his return season.  He played all 82 games eight times with the Bulls, and once with the Wiz.

Please...Kobe's not Artest or Bowen...

The righteous indignation is rich in here when we have somebody we love on our team...Who at best....Is in Kobe's class as a "dirty player".

I respect him. Especially staying in and shooting the foul shots after the injury. There has been lots of players with his talents, but not his drive and will. Speedy recoveries!!!! :)
Once you are labeled 'the best' you want to stay up there, and you can't do it by loafing around.

I'm sorry sir but have I ever once even hinted at the fact that Garnett wasn't a dirty player? Righteous indignation? Not sure how you get that. Irrational hate? That I could see.

Kobe's one of the greatest of all time and his cheap shots mean nothing in the scope of things. All of the greats make cheap shots. He's developed his game to a very, very fine level and that level of play requires constant maintenance. Just because he got to one of the highest levels any basketball player has ever reached, doesn't mean he's done. He's kept it up all the way until now, which is truly remarkable.

Who cares about his cheap shots?

He's a top ten player of all-time.  He's had an amazing career and earned has how much -- maybe $200 million?

I am not crying for him.  I don't get joy when anyone gets injured -- even Kobe. However, this is not like when Magic retired after revealing he was HIV+.  Despite my dislike for him and hatred for the Lakers, I believe I did cry that day (of course, everyone at the time thought it was a death sentence).   But this is torn achilles tendon and even if he never plays NBA basketball again, he is still a young wealthy, intelligent man who has the potential of a charmed life ahead of him.

If he never plays again, I won't care.

I don't think anyone was really expecting you to cry after Kobe Bryant suffers a career ending injury. And obviously nobody was even remotely comparing it to Magic's premature retirement due to HIV. Even the most sympathetic of us are basically saying, "I hate the Lakers, dislike Kobe the person, but I respect him as a player and this kind of sucks."

Crying or comparing him to Magic's first retirement seems like a weird reaction emotionally, right?

Fundamental difference....Kobe isn't lying about his condition.

Wasn't directed at you at all....Was the thread as a whole.   I should have just posted what I posted on it's own.

Do you think he comes back?   I could see him retiring after this one and this team.

He is Laker.  KG is our guy and a Celtic.  I am a Celtic fan, I hate the Lakers.   KG doesn't cheap shot as much and to be honest, he doesn't try to hide his kicks as part of his shot motion like Kobe does.   KG throws elbows mano e mano, Kobe kicks and makes it look like an accident.   KG also tangles with guys more his size not picking on guys littler than him.

That ankle is karma....
