I'm curious as for your thoughts. A thousand years is quite some time, and with our current tech boom, new things seem to be coming very quickly. I'm pretty young, but I know that the world has changed a lot in just the past ten years. Do you guys think humans will still be living on Earth in 1000 years? A lot of things could go wrong in this period, but if I live to 120, then humanity is 10% there! (age not disclosed)

-Will some scientific experiment go wrong and screw us all over? (resurrect dinosaurs, start some uncurable disease, make a robot that we can't stop, etc.)

-Will extraterrestials screw with our planet? (we provoke some planet with aliens into war, some disease gets carried over from some planet to Earth, aliens come over and kill us all, etc.)

-Will war end us all? (world war between EU, USA, China, Russia, nuclear bombs, just total war everywhere, etc.)

-Will governments be crazy? (dictatorships everywhere? communism everywhere? same as it is currently?

-Colonize other places (we all move away from Earth)

-Global warming, climate change, pollution, etc. make Earth uninhabitable

-An asteroid hits Earth and makes Earth uninhabitable

-The world ends on 12/31/3012 just because of this post (with my type of luck, probably gonna happen...)

-Nothing happens at all and we go into the "dark ages" for another 1000 years

OK, maybe I'm getting a little uncreative. What do you guys think? I think there's a 80-20 chance we make it to 3013, but eventually war and climate change will get to us and we'll either have to make drastic changes or we'll perish, or we'll go somewhere else.

Let's make this thread awesome!

(PS: I'm a cynic and I dunno if we make it that far ;D Honestly, I think somebody/some group is gonna mess with the world and reduce the population drastically such that the human population in 3013 is less than that of 2013... it's scary if you think about it; technology is changing too fast for us)

Yeah, if technology is developing at such a pace, we won't even know what's happening in 200 years, never mind 1000. Most of the things we have today seem unimaginable to a guy living in 1813...

Humans seem to be screwing up everywhere though.

Disease will likely cut out a huge chunk of humanity at some point if not complete eradicate it.  Question is whether it will be something that was man-made or just an evolution of some existing illness out there.

That or some idiotic technological/physics experiment will go wrong and mess things up big time.

I am just wondering if there will be enough clean water in the near future, never mind 1k years.  2013 population is 7 Billion.  Two-third of which live in extreme poverty....

Humans on 3013?  Probably.  Not sure how we are going to get there thou.  Hopefully hunger and poverty will be a thing of the past then....

Take a look at this nice pic:

Humans can't even detect over 90% of the asteroids surrounding Earth, which can be scary in a certain way. See, an asteroid that has the potential to destroy Earth can float into Earth without humans even detecting it, until it's waaaaaaaay too late. We're pretty lucky, but the chances of one of these hitting in the next 1000 years is still pretty slim.

But it's possible.

I envision a brighter future.

Mankind, in it's current form, has been around for over 250
thousand years. Man's homo ancestors (habilis and erectus)2 million years before that. The thousand years that we are discussing is like one particle of sand in an hourglass relatively speaking.

Viruses and bacteria have been around and constantly evolving for hundreds of million years. They haven't taken us out yet.

Technology has a better chance of saving us from them than they have of getting us.

I can see us exploring and colonizing other planets in a thousand years and therefore mankind proliferating rather than becoming extinct.

When I was in elementary school the world's population was 3 billion. U.S. population was 200M (now 400M).   That's in less than 50 years.  1000 years from now?  Who knows? But it is certain that population can't keep growing at current rates.  In fact, soon it will have to start shrinking.  How it will shrink is anyone's guess, but eventually it will have to happen.

You're old. ;D But it's much more likely that the human population will keep growing (eventually at a slower pace) until it approaches some horizontal asymptote when natural resources just can't support any more growth. China's already starting to slow down with its policies and the rest of the world will follow suit. In 1000 years, I'm sure we'll be somewhere around the human cap.

Some say it might even turn out like this:

And this is just 2150... imagine 3013... it'll eventually fall flat or go downwards (unless we happen to colonize extraterrestial planets

The last extinction event likely caused by an asteroid was about 70 MILLIONyears ago.

Almost infinitesimally likely in the next thousand years..

Too late for humans to launch an anti-asteroid satellite...? Wasn't that implied?

Here's to hoping humans have mastered living in outer space by then.
