Spencer Haywood was told on Friday he was in HOF, but he didn't actually make it

Ouch, really tough break for Haywood.

I wonder how close he got to making it - if someone incorrectly told him he was in I'm guessing it was very close.  Hopefully the press from this will ensure he'll get over the line next year.

I don't think he deserves to be in the Hall of Fame. He didn't accomplish enough.

No real team success. Spent most of his career on .500 teams or worse. Failed to lead Seattle anywhere. Asked to revive that great Knicks team of the early 1970s and was part of that hugely disappointing period of their ball team with Bob McAdoo. Never won anything in the NBA until the latter days of his career when he was a bench player (1980 Lakers). His only real team success came in his one year in the ABA (defeated Finalist) and with Team USA when he was 19-20 years old when he got a gold medal.

Only had 5 or so high level years in the NBA and 1 in the ABA. Had some big seasons and got some All-Star appearances and All-League selections. Career went downhill quickly and ended with a whimper. Got an ABA MVP in his sole ABA season too.

Peaked very early (19-20 years old) and failed to follow up that success and early promise with later accomplishments.

More famous for the lawsuit against the NBA than his accomplishments on the court. I don't think that is enough to get him into the Hall of Fame.

It's a shame. Wasted talent. Should have accomplished so much more. Should have gone down in history as one of the top five greatest power forwards in NBA history ... but he blew it. Failed talent. 

Not a Hall of Famer in my book.

I do love that Haywood would have a ring but was kicked off the Lakers during the Finals for falling asleep in a practice.  Can you imagine if that happened to someone today?  They'd never live it down.

I absolutely agree, I just think it sucks someone told him he was in when he wasn't.
