Offseason blowup scenario, trading KG and PP

Aside from the Clippers and Warriors, I think there are a couple of other possible destinations that make sense for one or both of KG and PP.

Atlanta might make some sense for either or both of them, depending on what Atlanta's early free agency period looks like.  If Atlanta can't get any free agents and doesn't want to keep Josh Smith, they would have the cap space and Josh Smith available for trade.  I think something like Josh Smith and Louis Williams for Pierce and Garnett would be a decent trade for both teams.

I think Minnesota might actually be a viable trade partner for Garnett.  They have a lot of pieces and KG might be ok with a trade back to "home". 

Utah would also be a decent trading partner with Millsap and Jefferson both being free agents.  A sign and trade of one of them for Pierce might work well for both teams.

San Antonio also makes sense as they are on their last legs as a contender and PP and/or KG could potentially put them over the top.  And how awesome would it be to see KG and TD play together.

Well KG would retire rather than go anywhere. And I wouldnt trade Pierce either. I would rather them both walk if Danny was thinking of trading them. And I think the best thing for the team would be to let them both come back next year and go to battle with a full healthy squad.

BUT... Since this thread is supposed to be for fun without the realm of reality I would go with this.

Trade 1:
Garnett, Terry, Lee a First and future second to OKC for Ibaka a resigned Martin and their first. (Swap of First rounders).

Trade 2:
Paul Pierce to Utah Brandon Bass and Fab Melo to Philly

Al Jefferson and Randy Foye to Philly

Bynum and Dorrell Wright to Boston

New Celtics Line up Post big three era:

Rondo/T. Williams
Bradley/Martin
Green/Wright
Ibaka/Sully
Bynum/Wilcox/Randolph

As much as I hate Bynum... I would enjoy going to battle with this lineup every day.

Good forum topic. IMO, I think Danny's last chance to make a "blowup" trade with KG/Pierce was at the trade deadline.

I think by this summer, the value for either player just won't be there.

Aka, if those rumors about Pierce to Dallas and Josh Smith to Boston were true, then I seriously doubt another deal like that will come up again.

But we'll see.

Unless KG's health improves I'd be shocked if he comes back next season.  Paul I can see playing for another few years and I would like him to be a celtic.  He can easily come off the bench and score against any second unit.  When his defense gets worse (and we've seen a drop off this year) is when he will retire.  That man can score forever.

I think Pierce to Atlanta for Josh Smith would make sense if Atlanta wanted to postpone their free agent spending until 2014 when there is a significantly better crop (especially if Howard stays in LA). They could still be competitive and get the cap savings a year later.

Utah makes a lot of sense too, but I don't know what the situation is with the Celtics and the sign and trade, they may not be able to use it. But just moving Pierce and taking on Millsap or Jefferson would give us a great lineup next year and then we could take the savings post KG retirement.

I'd love to see Pierce go to the Spurs actually. He'd be an immediate upgrade over Leonard (although Leonard has all the potential) and they'd be like the old school vet team taking on all the youngin's. Fun to watch. And Leonard would be a nice pick up for the C's.

As for KG, I could possibly see a KG for Gasol swap to the Lakers.

With next year possibly being Kobe's last year, I could see KG joining him (I believe they're friends) and then both retiring together after the year is over.

In return the Celts get a competent big man who can score.

As for Pierce, I don't see Danny dealing him. As much of a "bold" reputation as Danny has built for himself, I think he would get cold feet at dealing the captain.

Otherwise, you would think he would've dealt him by now.

PP - candidate to be traded in the off season to a contender
KG - candidate to retire or be traded
Rondo - candidate to be traded or seriously hampered by injury

I guess you could custom make a Sully or Green one?

As for Chicago, I don't know if Danny would be willing to trade our two HOF's to Chicago to watch them demolish us. It'd be pretty upsetting watching them and D-Rose dominate the Celtics.

Maybe I'm unusual, but that wouldn't really bug me. I'd be happy for them, like I was for Employee #8 in '06. I'd also  be ecstatic to see the Heat go down. This seems like the most plausible trade in my eyes, given KG's from the area, the Bulls obviously benefit, and that despite Boozer's bounce back season they may feel that he and Rose just don't mesh on the court.

We obviously would be taking a step back so I'd be fine with the far off distance of Charlotte's pick. Besides, it doesn't say anywhere that we can't trade it before it get's cashed in...

That said I realize this is just hypothetical but I agree with BbTim that I'd prefer rolling the dice with what we have + whatever we could add during the summer.

the problem with this conventional wisdom that the Celts need to rebuild and do it by trading their older vets is ......... those vets (Paul & KG) have been basically consistent (assuming decent health).

the problem with this team to me seems to be the inconsistency of Green, Terry, Lee and even Bradley. Just never know who is going to show up on any particular night and you can't win a title with players like that. Jeff Green is brilliant at times but then just disappears on many nights. That is who Jeff Green is and probably always will be.

if anything, I trade Green and Rondo - the Celts could get a big return on them with which to rebuild and keep #5 and #34 to lead and teach and keep playing well - then let them retire on their terms as great Celtics and put those numbers in the rafters.

I don't think KG is going to play for any other team at this point.

Most likely "blowup" scenario in my opinion is KG retires and then the team agrees with Pierce not to pick up his option and then Pierce goes and joins a contender (like the Clippers).

Good point. Unfortunately, with Rondo tearing his ACL, I just don't think you're going to get market value for him in a trade this summer.

Best thing is for him to come back strong, prove he's healthy and then go from there.
