Gary Payton has been selected for induction into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame, according to multiple reports.

NBA.com and FoxSportsFlorida.com report that Payton, the anticipated headliner of the class of 2013, will have his selection officially announced on Monday and that John Stockton and George Gervin will be his presenters.

Th seventeen-year NBA veteran was announced as a finalist during 2013 All-Star Weekend in Houston.

Known for his lockdown defense and motor mouth, Payton was a nine-time All-Star, a nine-time All-Defensive selection and a nine-time All-NBA selection. Payton teamed with Shawn Kemp to lead the SuperSonics to the 1996 Finals and he tagged along as a reserve on the 2004 Lakers Western Conference championship team and the 2006 Miami Heat title-winning squad.

The Oakland native was named Defensive Player of the Year in 1996, the only time since 1988 that a guard has earned that recognition. He led the NBA in steals in 1995-96 and was tops in assists in 1999-2000.

Nicknamed “The Glove” for his on-ball defensive prowess, the No. 2 pick in the 1990 NBA draft earned more than $104 million during his career, which included stops with the SuperSonics, Lakers, Celtics and Heat.

Payton, 44, retired in 2007 with career averages of 16.3 points, 6.7 assists, 3.9 rebounds and 1.8 steals per game.

Another player robbed of a title by Jordan.  Lucky for him he got one as a role player later on in his career.

The "Glove" was the prototype for defensive PGs.

  • Everyone's excited for the new era.
Well deserved.  Payton, along with Dennis Johnson, was one of the best defensive guards ever.

i never understood wat the fascination was wit gary payton. years ago wen i first heard his name i was under the impression that he was one of the all time celtic greats. turns out he was only a celtic for 77 games, and didnt even end his career in a celtic uniform. i got the same impression when i first heard of bill walton but by the time he came got to boston he was washed up and whack.
