  • You ain't the boss of the freakin' bedclothes.
This is a place where people should be allowed to voice how much they hate those little cliche pieces of language that for one reason or another people feel have gone out of style/grinds their gears.

Please don't quote anyone directly, or call out individual members. That''s how you have a bad time.

I really hate when people say something "grinds their gears".  I mean, where are we?  Detroit?

Beat me to it. I hate "grinds my gears" it reminds me of that sub-par cartoon that everyone thinks is hysterical.

I'll start.

I cannot stand the saying,

"I'll take _____ seven days of the week, and twice on Sundays."

For some reason, sometime last year, I started reading that and then hating sunshine. Really? You'll take it twice on Sundays? Given a choice between winning potentially winning a goldfish or buying a small cotton candy, you take the cotton candy every day of the week and twice on Sundays? Well screw you buddy, what if they don't serve cotton candy on SUndays at all??? WHAT IF THE FAIR LEFT???

How is, 'every day of the week and twice on sundays' superior to 'I want option A, and have no interest in option B'?? I mean..I appreciate color in commentary, but Come On. Sometimes, if they color you're using would've also been used to color the Brady Bunch's commentary, maybe choose a different shade of hyperbole, yeah?

I know that 'it is what it is', but honestly, unlike the emmy-award winning completely underrated show Family Guy, it really Grinds My Gears.

In sports, my new (anti)favorite is "When you look at..."

Bonus points for combining with the indefinite article. Extra bonus points for swapping between first person and third mid-sentence. If you can do all that and work in an "any time..." I'm pretty sure WEEI will give you your own show on the spot, as in:

"Any time you look at a Jeff Green, I see a guy who can score the basketball"

<click. Back to NPR.>

...this is why I've never heard Mike Mutnansky finish a sentence (although, rumor has it, he never has).

As Grandpa fairweather used to say, "People who say 'plain and simple' a lot tend to be both."

I've never been able to stand that phrase because it usually seems to stand in for "I haven't thought this through at all, but I have a strong opinion anyway."

Oddly I don't think I'd ever heard anyone say "grinds my gears" before the Family Guy movie.  Maybe it just wasn't around where I grew up.

When we watch football (ie before basketball starts) my wife and I always make fun of the announcers and analysts for always saying "football" instead of "ball" or just no adjective at all.

It seems like you can't have players make good plays to win games in the NFL, you have to have football players make good football plays to win football games in the National Football League.

Maybe it's confirmation bias but this tendency doesn't seem nearly as strong in any other sport.

Not that you care, or you might already know, but that's a play on a phrase leftover from the vaudeville days.

I did not know that, and so I googled it, and now I do. I thank you for that.

I don't like "meh" ... too apathetic and vague. It's a way to try to make a careless statement about something without having to really explain what you mean ... as soon as i see it I stop reading and turn to something else. Hate it.

when someone says to me "well we'll just have to agree to disagree"
boy does that bring violent thoughts to my mind

also that old "hello" saying people would do, that should be retired
