a sprained ankle is one thing, a foot injury, especially for a big man, brings to mind a stress fracture, which would mean KG would be likely done for the year, maybe even for good considering he thought about hanging it up a lot lately.

It's 50/50 on the sources as to wether or not they call it a foot or ankle injury. The first reports called it a foot injury. When reports of Lee's injury came out, then they began calling both of then ankle injuries. Makes me think the writers are sloppy. As for the x-ray vs MRI, of course you need an x-ray for a fracture, but when the celtics say MRI, by now I consider it the same as saying "more tests"

I do believe an MRI would be used for a possible stress fracture.

yes, MRI's are also better in some cases for distinguishing a stress fracture from a soft tissue injury:
